It was both. In the early years, Belichick's defenses definitely did a lot of the heavy lifting. Brady constantly taking below market contracts was the biggest reason why they stayed so good for so long though.

An average to good QB being carried by his defense

I don’t know any serious sports fans who will say Brady was great when he came into the league.

Example:

His final EIGHT games of the 2001 season

3 TDS
6 INTS

He had ONE TD in the playoffs

And they won the SB because the defense shut down the Greatest Show of Turf

MUH BRADY!

wrong. so wrong. he had elite defenses for maybev the first third of his career. if they had an elite defense with Moss, they would havec won easily

Belichick was 5-13 in his second season at 0-2 before Brady stepped in and went 11-3 and won the super bowl. He was on his way to getting canned again soon.

Going to Tampa just made everything a certainty. Tom is the fricking GOAT he could of won super bowls for plenty of coaches.

It took that helmet catch and Asante Samuel dropping the easiest dead duck lob of an int you ever saw both in that last drive for that goofy bastard to win.

Bill B was 5-13 with his $100 million QB in Bledsoe. Wasted perhaps the 2nd best statistical season of Bernie Kosar. Despite solid play from his young Qb ( Jones) Bill still struggles to reach .500 over 11 seasons without Brady.

I'm seeing a pattern.

This is a myth. Brady won super bowls with like 2 or 3 pro bowlers tops on his team and dante Hightower was the best player on D.

Some people will never admit it. But Bill is not a brilliant GM. Tom did so much with so little. Everyone knew it, everyone knows it, and it’s okay that people keep acting like it was all Bill.

Brady is the GOAT.

Brady had more top five defenses than any QB ever by like a ridiculous number.

Brady wasn’t even considered an all pro caliber player until the Patriots had three super bowls.

Belichick is 78-91 without Brady. That includes a 1-2 playoff record.

First two Super Bowls were Bill's. Last 4 were Tom's. Brady was just a game manager for the first two Super Bowls and didn't become elite until the 3rd one.

BS. Atlanta was up 28-3. Atlanta gave that game up because without a defense, there is no come back. They played prevent defense during the comeback. Brady had all day to dink and dunk.

The Rams was a 13-3 snoozefest.

Without those defenses he doesn't win any SB.

The Giants DL also abused the Pats OL that game. That really was the key imo.

Also Eli did it twice against Brady. (I do think Brady is the undisputed GOAT, btw).

Brady is a huge part, but Bill and the front office managed that team perfectly and never bogged them down with a bad contract for an older veteran.

They let them walk and plugged a younger player in.

Brady is GOAT. But without Bill he’s probably just a borderline top 5 QB

There’s a non-trivial chance he’s a journeyman if he had been drafted by a shite franchise. People like to think he’s the goat so he would have won anywhere but with a bad franchise as a late round pick would he get a fair chance? He can throw a perfect pass but the WR drops it or worse bounces off him and gets picked. The goes 5-11 and the coach gets fired maybe they draft a QB. I would think given his work ethic and skill he would have eventually wound up with a good team and won. Kurt Warner didn’t throw a TD pass until he was 28.

On the flip side Pittsburgh took Tee Martin in the 5th round of the 2000 draft #163. If they took Brady I could see him winning at least 6 there
