re: Watching 1985 NBA Finals on ESPN Classic... they aren't that good...

This isn't 1973 Kareem we're talking about here. This is 1986 Kareem who has old and washed up and on his last leg. Kareem would probably get his 18/12 but that's it. And Kareem was never a great rim protector by any stretch so Lebron and DWade would be able to drive with impunity.

Kinda like Duncan dropped a 50/20?
Are you really comparing Duncan to the Top Scorer of all time?

Exactly. It is ridiculous to think the 1985 team could compete. It isnt a knock on the older generation. The 1985 team would crush the 1958 team. Just like the 2040 team would crush the 2013
if you gave guys like Magic today's advances, then obviously they'd be some of the NBA's top players... but a matchup purely based on a team from 1985 and a team from 2013... there's no comparison.

Check out 1988.
Lewis ran a 9.92, and three other guys ran sub 10.0 times. Of course, Johnson was one at 9.79, which is the same time Gatlin ran in London. Gatlin has now been attached to a failed PED test, so aside from Bolt lapping the field essentially, the guy who cut the tape in 1988 finished with the same time as the bronze medal winner in 2012. Sure, that's improvement, but I didn't argue there was no improvement. I argued against exponential improvement. The improvement has been pretty slight, and we could attribute that to simple better technology or even the pace rabbit effect (no one could break the sound barrier until Yeager, but once we knew it was possible, everyone did it).
It's been 24 years since Seoul, so look at how the 88 guys compared to 24 years prior. No one in the field cracked 10 seconds (10.06 was the winning time and 10.25 was the silver medal). The median time went from 10.42 to 9.99 to 9.80. The times in 1964 crush those in 1956, when amateurism still held sway. The gold medal time was 10.62. The median time was 10.79. And that was only 8 years prior.
The rate of improvement is slowing considerably. I do think athletes get progressively better, but I also think people way overestimate how much better.
Let's look at the mile. Gold medal winning time in 1964, 1988, and 2012? 3:38, 3:35, 3:34. The median time? 3:40, 3:37, 3:36. Almost imperceptible improvement. In almost 50 years, we've shave four seconds off the mile time, and only 1 second in 24 years.

I agree. I'm not knocking 1985 basketball or the players. I just don't see how the 1985 Lakers would beat a team like the 2013 Heat.
I just don't see it from a team basketball standpoint, individual player standpoint, or athletic standpoint. I just don't see it happening.

My biggest pet peeve is when people talk about how much more physical the games were in the 80s, simply because of a Rambis clothesline or the bad boy Pistons. There were definitely more hard fouls, but today's game has a ton more banging play in play out.
I've watched those 80s Boston/LA series' many times on Classic and Youtube. They are a ton of fun to watch, but guys were literally playing ZERO defense. There was almost no effort to stop anybody.
People should watch the defensive sets when they get a chance. Defenders literally sagged 5-6 feet off of their man on the perimeter. In the post, the offensive player could come down and plant himself in whatever spot he wanted. The defender didn't even fight him for position.

quote:Exactly. This is something that I noticed right away. It was glaringly obvious how much room the defenders gave and how lazy the close outs were after the post player kicked it back out.

The defense was pretty bad... especially for how simple the defense was.

The defense was bad, which is why I wasn't impressed. They were getting easy looks.

Because nothing is better than watching Larry Bird shoot a basketball.

SLAM: I believe you had talked about seeing Larry shoot in the gym.
PG: He picked a ball up that had rolled over. He rolled up his sleeves and made about 15 in a row and just walked out like nothing just happened. It was the craziest thing I’ve seen.
SLAM: How did you and the rest of the team react?
PG: We were speechless. We didn’t know whether to keep shooting or just to end practice. It was sweet, man.

Their offenses are very simplistic, as is the defense, and the players are nowhere near as good. Not even close.
And this is the Celtics and Lakers.

Go check his blocks/ DWS numbers. Also keep in mind the NBA didn't start recording blocks/steals or defensive rebounds until 1973

He only led the NBA in blocks 4 different times and has the 3rd most career blocks in NBA history....(this despite the fact that the NBA didnt even keep track of blocks until his 5th year in the league
