I heard on the radio last week that Alex Smith had seven different Offensive Coordinators during his time with the 49ers. Maybe that was also the problem with Vernon's consistency.

His career reminds me of Colston. Always solid but few accolades and 1 ring.

He was the 4th best TE in the NFC most of his career.

These guys were all undersized tight ends with good hands but too slow to be WR's.

Guys like Green, Sharpe and Davis were a different breed.

King Keraun’s spoof of Vontae quitting at halftime is hilarious

Freak combine
Cried on draft night

Both helped make sure he would be remembered and his numbers/draft position made you assume he was a beast regardless of what he did

Combination of inept offensive coaching who didn't know how to employ a WR/TE tweener and inconsistent QB delivery sure didn't help.

He also wasn't the best route runner and did best on longer plays when he could clown on a LB. His natural speed (combine 4.38) and YAC got him his stats.

People forget he was actually also a dominant blocker. Just a freak specimen.

In the right system (NE) he could have been borderline HOF, but he was ahead of his time. NFL offenses employ speed so much better now.
