Steve McNair made the same fatal mistake (just in reverse). His friends tried to warn him too.
Nobody should reasonably expect to be murder-suicided, but whether you're Steve McNair or little Miss Utah track runner, you know when you've veered out of your lane romantically speaking. And that was likely the primary appeal to begin with.

I just watched the 20/20 episode on this case, and it was infuriating. This guy had been paroled 2 times and then sent back to jail for violations, and then paroled a 3rd time before he met Lauren. At one of those parole hearings he admitted that he had raped 2 other women that they didn't know about, and they still paroled him.
She contacted and filed reports with the campus police many, many times and they didn't take it seriously and took hardly any measures to try and protect her. She contacted SLC police multiple times and they directed her back to campus police every time. And then there is the cop who passed around her explicit photos as if they were a nudie mag.
The murderer was on probation and actively committing multiple felonies that they were made aware of-impersonating police, extorsion, and they didn't even try and find him and arrest him, nor did they even contact his parole officer to make her aware of what he was doing. If they had done the bare minimum and made a simple phone call to his parole officer, Lauren would likely still be alive.
And I realize that her parents are victims of this too, they lost a child, but how do you not take proactive measures to try and protect your child if you know all of this is going on? I'm assuming that most people on here wouldn't stand idly by if they knew that their daughter was in another state being harassed and threatened by some 6'3 250 lb rapist who met and seduced their daughter under a false identity.
Her friends were actually the only ones that were actively trying to protect her.
A lot of people failed this woman. Just mind-blowing incompetence and neglect by the state and the police.

The woman failed herself as well by not recognizing obvious red flags. Amazing someone like that could be so oblivious.

This guy was a maniacal manipulator. College aged adults don't always make the best decisions, but she was only with him for a month before realizing what he was. She tried very hard to protect herself when she made the realization. This is not on her.

She really really went out of her orbit to find the guy. Ex-felon over a decade older...? Did she not ask even the most basic questions. I think that you are just having trouble understanding how skilled of a manipulator and liar this guy was. She very clearly did not know that he was 37, or an ex-felon, as she was lied to and manipulated into believing that he was a 28 year old college student. This is pretty simple stuff man. Even if you believe that you are much too smart and aware to get duped by anyone in this world, it happens to a lot of people. Good, well-meaning people. That does not make them any less of a victim.

I think that their "excuse" was that a person can not incriminate their self in a parole hearing per the 5th amendment, so it was not admissible, or some bullshite like that.
