You've screwed up, but there's hope. Year round ball for the next two years along with weekly hitting and pitching lessons should get him caught up. Just make sure he's throwing the 12-6 curve by 7 yrs old.

Try to use a little nuance in your thinking.

it's all a money grab that the leagues and bat manufacturers are all in on.

What kick backs do the leagues get? Kind of a weak conspiracy theory.

Money to operate on. Not each local league but the Governing body itself. Dixie Youth, Babe Ruth, Cal Ripkin etc.

How pissed would you be if you bought a $250 bat last year expecting it to be used for multiple years?

I’m hesitant to buy one of these high dollar ones this year, because I think they might just change it again when they see the performance of these bats.

Didn't think of it that way. You get an apology!

It was 2 years ago and $300, but I was certainly pissed

And are high school baseball teams now almost solely comprised of former travel ball kids? If so, is that just a function of most of the talented kids playing travel ball?

I’d hate to preclude my kids from having a shot at high school ball.
don't let your kid be that kid who could have played HS ball but couldn't just bc he wasn't good enough to make a big time 5A program... Lots of schools need players

That’s a good point. I certainly hope he still loves baseball when he gets there. I had forgotten how much I love it.

But now, I get to vicariously play through him. Woohoo I’m that Dad.

USA bats suck.. If they want the kids to hit wood then just go ahead and do it. As with most things, I suspect it comes down to money. By changing the rules you get an immediate run on the new approved bats.

Can't help you with the bat issue. Been out of baseball for several years.

But l can give you some advice regarding travel ball. Look at the size of your kid's school. If it's a big school, extra exposure to the sport will only help. For example, when my kids get to high school, they will be on a campus with 1600 kids. Although not every kid will tryout for the school team, a lot will. Travel ball has developed my kids skills, and they'll make their school team.

Talk to some parents with older kids who play the same sport. You'll eventually find one that you can talk to about the level of competition on the school team without having to listen to claims of their kid being the next Derek Jeter.

Find out what your kid likes and support him to become better at it, regardless of what it is. And don't be the parent in the bleachers or sideline that makes everybody else cringe.

What I want to know is, is it reasonable to yell “stay down!” when your 9 year old doesn’t stop a ground ball?

I started yelling that at my kid at 6. Little guy gets his listening skills from his mom.

To the travel ball/rec question my answer is do what your kid has the ability to do. If he isn’t being challenged bc the rec league is terrible, get him a few tournaments. If he can’t field a ground ball or throw a strike, don’t spend $1,000 on travel ball jerseys and arm sleeves.

Know your kid and put their best interest first, not what your wife wants to put on Facebook.

New bat standard started Jan 1, 2018. If you are going in the $200 range, I suggest the Louisville Slugger 618 Solo. Best 1 piece bat I've seen with USA stamp.

That’s what every review I’ve read says, but they are out of stock everywhere. If you want to spend $300, the Dirty South bat is supposed to be good.

I watched a video of a kid doing a home run derby, switching out this year and last years version of basically the same Easton bat, and it was sad. He still hit a few with this years, but the difference in the bats was stark.

My son played rec ball, and was a grade above most he played against. Bc of our work schedules, my then wife and I decided against travel ball. He’s graduating high school this year. He’s the only kid on his team that didn’t/doesn’t play travel ball. Last Friday, he was 2 for 3 - single, double, and 3 rbi’s. So he’s able to hold his own. As a side note, he’s the only kid on his team with a 32 on his ACT....which I’m much more proud of!

USA bat update: 3 games in and not a single ball over the outfielders heads.

The USA bats are dead. That is the point of the bats. In the league that my son plays in there have only been 6 HRs this season (all levels). Last year at this time, there were 59 HRs.

With that said, I actually am enjoying the games with the USA bats. It makes defense and base running more important.

I have not seen a USA bat that is live. They are all pretty comparable to each other.
