Ive always viewed that play as an all time horrific play, not as much a great one The lack of sliding from the base runner is far more egregiously bad then what Jeter did was great
a good throw (instead of airmailing the cutoff) guns Giambi by half a mile.
Giambi slides and he’s safe.
Jester was supposed to be there as the 3rd cutoff man. Him and Torre even admit that’s how it practiced.
Typically Jeter would go to 3rd with throw, but you got slow arse Giambi out of gas and sputtering to the plate.
Had the SS name been Bill Smith, you see the highlight once that night, the. never hear about it again.
DJ made plenty of phenomenal plays in a hall of fame career. But the two he gets most credit for (this one and the one against Boston where he ends up in the stands) shouldn’t even crack his top 10 if you take off the Jeter glasses.

Break it down however you want. It didn’t go as planned in any facet and Jeter made a helluva play.

The pass to Michael Clayton before the bluegrass miracle happened. It was like a 14 yard pass or something that set it all up.

Derek Jeter flipping the ball to home against the A's.
Derek Jeter diving into the stands 3 seconds after making a miraculous catch on a routine pop fly.
Severely underrated.

Properly rated. It was a good heads up play.

Might be the most overrated play in sports history.

Might literally be the most overrated play in baseball history.

The fumble recovery for the Cowboys at the start of the 2nd half of the second SB against the Bills. The game changed at that moment. Plus… not a play but the Drive in the same game that featured almost every play giving the ball to Emmit Smith.

In true pre-2021 Georgia sports fashion, they still managed to find a way to lose this game
This was an amazing throw. A 50 yard piss rocket that hits the receiver perfectly in stride.

you’re right. it was a GOOD play.
but it’s treated as the most phenomenal all-time amazingest play ever.
things can be good and grossly overrated at the same time.

Saints Super Bowl onside kick.

caught ball in fair territory.
takes 19 steps and wall trips him into the crowd.
ESPN headline:
“Jeter dives into crowd to catch foul ball”

if we talking just LSU, Blair Barbier made a great snag and throw with 2 outs in 6th (i think that inning) and bases loaded against Stanford in 2000 championship game.
that ball gets through, or throw not in time, etc and Stanford likely has a big inning.
play gets overlooked because of all the other great things that happened in that game.
Ray Wright catch
Barbier homer
Witten game tying homer
Cresse with game winning hit
etc.

2002 World Series game 6 Giants up 3 games to 2,
Bottom of 8th game, one run game.
Bonds misses the pop up, then boots the ball, letting the tying and winning runs get into scoring position for the Rally Monkey.
Angels win in game 7

The amazing 3 pointer UNC made to tie the championship game with Villanova before the buzzer beater
Could very well be the greatest shot in basketball history that no one will remember. The level of difficulty plus clutchness factor was off the charts.

Ray Wright catch was the spark that started the fire.

Eric Wright's tackle of Drew Pearson after The Catch.
The Cowboys still had a little time after the kickoff, and Pearson caught a pass and would've scored a long TD, but Wright barely tackled him by a few fingers.

Paul O'Neill bobbled this groundball in the outfield with the winning, walk off run rounding third. Out of frustration and thinking he lost the game for the Reds with the error, he swung his leg and kicked the ball.
Incredibly, he kicked the ball directly to the first baseman and the potential winning run had to stop at third.
