I think Billy Donovan would have been a safer hire but don’t think he’s enough better that an AD is going to essentially forfeit year 1 with other good options out there.

A successful pro coach who was fired from their last job and has never coached at the college level or recruited? Maybe im missing something

Well for one Malone isn’t 70 banging a 25 year old cheerleader (though he may be, that might be how UNC got him there)

So they were interested in Billy but didn't want to wait for him. Is that not the dumbest thing in the world? Mike Malone isn't working right now. He would have taken the job in two weeks.

And who cares about the portal opening tomorrow? You are UNC, you'll still have a decent team next year. You aren't hiring a coach for next year, you're hiring a coach for the next 10 years.

Yeah he could move into the Brad Stevens role and completely get out of Coaching

Could be a possibility. Bulls aren’t competing for a championship any time soon but maybe he can get them on the right path from upstairs. He’s already won 2 championships at a non-traditional hoops program so i don’t really see him having this great desire to go back to college especially with the modern landscape.

We literally did the same thing when we hired Pope. Got turned down by some bigger current names but was going to have to wait a couple of weeks for Donovan to finish up the Bull’s season. Barnhart panicked and moved on.

They waited to hire their football coach until after the portal had opened and it didn’t turn out so well.

When did the story about UNC being “all in on Donovan” come out?

I personally think not was a great hire and exactly who they wanted it to be. Since Hubert a lot of the baby blue nation wanted to re-emphasize Carolina’s play thru the big men and Malone checks off the boxes here. Anyone worried about recruiting shouldn’t, the brand sells itself. In an interview with Tyler hamdsborough it sounds like this has been a done deal since Friday and who they wanted. I know there a lot of ppl who wanted Billy Donovan but there are alot of uncertainties there and May not have even been possible. I’m curious to watch these guys play next year. Mainly I wanna see if he keeps that secondary break tempo or goes to a more traditional and balanced tempo, guess we shall see!

This is a panic hire. It definitely reminds me of Avery Johnson.

Nah, Goodman just got yal thinking something that was never real in the first place. Malone was a done deal before the Donovan story even came out.

Yesterday and today from none other than Jeff Goodman.

Again, he knows nothing related to UNC. I can’t believe there are people who think he’s actually right here even when UNC hired a coach who wasn’t BD.

Okay, I would be happy to be wrong.

FTR I like Malone and thought he got a bum deal in Denver. They didn't do enough to put pieces around their super star. And then blamed him.

At least he has a world championship.
