Does he have any college coaching experience? Could this turn into Bill Belichick type of hire?

Yeah, feels like an Avery Johnson or Mike Woodson type of hire. Guys with little to no college coaching experience who had some success in the pros. Neither was terrible but they ultimately didn’t meet expectations.

Feels closer to a Woodson hire...
Although Malone is more of an X's and O's type coach compared to those two...

They must be counting on a GM to handle NIL/roster building and hoping Malone can develop and coach. He’s gonna be 55 when the new season starts, is he going to want to deal with recruiting?

I remember wanting the Pelicans to hire him a decade ago… what a weird arse hire

The NBA Championship on his resume will carry weight in recruiting and on the court.
He won that recently enough that current or incoming guys will be aware of it. It's not like he won it 20 years ago.
Plus for the guys who are looking at their time at UNC as being a springboard to the NBA -- they will look favorably on Malone having that insight into the NBA scouting system and those recent connections into the whole process.
I don't think it's a guaranteed homerun hire/success, but IMO there are some solid recruiting and player response benefits.

With the the type of players UNC usually get Malone will be perfect.

Only way this makes sense is if Donovan said no.
I know the portal opens tomorrow and Donovan himself wasn’t talking about his next move until after the bulls season concludes next week. You have to wait on Donovan if his agent feels he’ll take it.
Same scenario kentucky was in with Donovan 2 years ago. Can't afford to wait if they aren't 100% coming.

They have some clips of him at UNC practice a few months back....
So there was some relationships there before hand... I would imagine that MJ had something to also do with it in a way that he did incorporate some risk/reward situation...
Again, all of college sports is losing its luster with the traditions...
This will just be the next...also initially just derails anything along the lines of traditions and rivalries.

- He’s a great coach, championship coach
- Players who want to win absolutely love him
- He’s especially great working with bigs and UNC was built on their front line players
He’ll do great at UNC

They'd whiff on the portal this year but you bite the bullet and take a so-so first year and you've got your hall of fame coach.

It appears that UNC is moving off the "ties to the school" mentality. This a solid hire for them.

Did they learn nothing from Belichick?
I assume that they confirmed that there is no 24 year old attention seeking girlfriend involved this time.
It’s also a different sport. UNC enjoys some roster construction advantages in basketball that they do not have in football.

UNC Isn't a typical hire
Neither is Kentucky. But it reinforces the thought that just because you are one of the traditional powers in the sport it doesn't mean you can just cherry pick another great program's HC. UK was going to hire Hurley...then Donovan...then Oats...then Drew, only to eventually settle on Pope.
I think UNC fans would have been angry if they didn't make a "big name" hire...just like UK fans were when Pope was initially hired, which probably took some other good college coaches out of the running based on name recognition alone.

Closing a page to a very historical run... Some places can be blessed to pull off what UNC has done.
It can easily happen again for UNC. It's not like the support for basketball is going away anytime soon. It just may take a few years of wandering in average (for UNC standards) to get there. Look at UConn. Calhoun is forced out. The job goes to an "in-family" assistant. He initially has good success, but it fades. The UConn hires Rhode Island's coach.
Maybe Malone is UNC's Larry Brown (as a coach).

If tweet fails to load, click here. Billy D’s bosses just got axed so i wonder if he’s about to inherit more power
