quote:

Veteran umpire Joe West confiscated a card from Phillies reliever Austin Davis in the eighth inning of Philadelphia's 7-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Saturday night.

Davis and Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said he was using the card merely for information on the Cubs' hitters. West said that was illegal under Rule 6.02(c)(7), which states that the pitcher shall not have on his person, or in his possession, any foreign substance

How do you feel about this? I guess it violates the letter of the law, but certainly not the spirit. Joe West says “look at me” again. The main problem I have is that we’re going so far with this analytics stuff that now you have pitchers slowing down the game to consult a card on every hitter. Where does that end?

I don't care to see relievers pulling index cards out of their backsides to read up on who's up next.

Learn it before the game. Gotta go with Joe West here Lou.

There was a pitcher in the early 2000s that had very colorful tattoos on his arm, and he was forced to cover them by the umpire because they were distracting. So, perhaps he could, but they could also force him to remove or cover the writing?

You get paid millions to throw a baseball. Take time to learn what you need to know. Jesus.

Outfielders use cards for positioning, I don’t see why this is a big deal

It's not.

Update: Teams have been informed that players can use reference cards as long as they do not delay the game. Austin Davis’ card did not violate 6.03(c)(7).

See no issue with this... Scouting and the reporting should be relayed in from the dugout to the catcher, not the pitcher pulling out his notebook on the mound.

Joe West was a moron who incorrectly applied a rule, which I think he knew at the time was a stretch to begin with. If ol Joe thought he was in the right, he would have ejected the guy.
