What? I actually like Islam a lot. He's a great dude and hilarious. But he is a boring fricking fighter
Merab is probably the only grappler that actually puts on exciting fights in the UFC right now.

Striking is an easier visual art to perceive. I totally get it.
People don’t get grappling until they actually do it. Sure they can understand an arm or choke but they won’t understand the setup prior to getting the submission in. It’s more nuanced than what you can just perceive on ppv and mma.
I also can’t watch straight grappling competitions like I used to. It’s not appealing and I do get that.
In order to understand it you really have to train in it to gain the appreciation what someone like Islam can do.

This has nothing to do with my point

Islam might be the best to ever do it. I know it would never happen but would be awesome to see him and Khabib go at it boring or not.

Ok let me walk you through it.
My point: These Dagestanis are dominant grapplers. They utilize calf kicks and take downs and top control flawlessly. They are seemingly unbeatable. I respect their skills and wins. Its boring AF. The point of the UFC is ultimately entertainment.
Watching Islam lay on a guy and maybe go for an arm and then switch to maybe an arm triangle to maybe a rear naked with rabbit punches that are doing no damage, all to simply gas his opponent out for 20 mins with the hopes of getting an easy finish is not fun to watch.
"Oh you dont know what you are seeing". I know exactly what im seeing. I know its skillful and hard. Whatever. So is coding. I dont want to watch someone do that either.
Spamming calf kicks. Jon Jones spamming teep kicks, wrestle fricking. It will never be must see tv.

Part of what makes these types of fights seem boring is the other fighter. JDM was content to play defense on the ground and took zero chances. Islam was continuously trying to get in a position to finish the fight and JDM played good defense and was content to lose a decision.
It's a bit unfair to blame just 1 fighter, especially the dominant one who regularly has spectacular finishes, when the other fighter doesn't even attempt to do anything to win the fight and plays the equivalent of prevent defense.

Yes, he is.

At no point in that fight did Islam try to finish JDM.

Very true
With another active grappler such as Oliveira more openings are available for submissions

quote:Topuria's obviously willing to put his undefeated record on the line vs. Islam. He was a wrestler taking guys out with submissions before he switched to being a KO artist. Nearly had Charles in a crucifix.
Ilia should stay in the kid’s lane at LW. He wound get ragdolled vs Islam at WW.
Islam has had trouble against smaller guys. Volk did better against Islam in their first fight than JDM did last night.
It's the only Conor-Khabib type matchup that exists right now.
Let's see them at the White House in 2026. Double champ vs. double champ.

He is definitely in that mix. The Guy is really good everywhere. Grappling, especially his wrestling is next level.

I didn’t hear anyone complain when Randy Couture or Matt Hughes, Daniel Cormier, GSP, or Merab wrestled their way to a win.
Then you weren’t paying attention.

I think Islam is boring AF, but he did attempt to setup a D'Arce a couple times. The thing is, just like GSP, he will only attempt a sub if he knows he won’t give up positioning or an advantage. It’s “smart” but it’s risk averse and boring AF.

These “Daggys” just dry hump people to death. It’s horribly boring.

You guys are like JDM’s face, going from confident and excited before the fight to crying at the end.

Islam is too good. You always wanna believe that the next contender will have a shot, but no. He will just keep smothering people. I have no clue how his reign ends. I don’t see anyone on the roster that can beat him

Stop being an emotional female. I never said Daggys weren’t great at what they do. They should have their own dry humping league though.
