UConn’s average margin of victory was 20 ppg

in the NCAA tournament
The closest game was Miami in the Final 4 who they beat by 13.
The Huskies defense allowed an average of 64 ppg. This has to be one of the most dominant March Madness runs in recent memory

They were somehow absolutely horrendous in January and nearly unbeatable the rest of the year. They had a 4 seed resume, but the talent level was much higher than that.

They rolled through non-conference play at 15-0 and got bored in the middle of the season. They flipped the switch again when the calendar turned to March. Turning that switch on again is hard to do sometimes.

2018 Villanova played two games closer than this. What UConn just did to the rest of the field is pretty extraordinary.

2009 UNC got screwed having to face the winner of LSU-butler in the second round.
Lsu should've been a 4 and butler a 6 but the committee gave them an 8-9 in the overall 1 seeds bracket...

They also finished 4th in their conference and beat two 5 seeds in the final 4 (in arguably the worst final 4 field ever).
Uconn was clearly the best team this season, but this was a down year for college basketball overall; they have no place amongst all time greats.

I'm not going to crap on a program for winning a bunch of national championships because I have never seen my school win a natty in anything...but I was looking at UConn's history in the tournament and was struck by something...they've been pretty damn lucky with their championship game opponents.
They did beat a 1-seed Duke team in 1999, and Uconn was stacked that year anyways.
Otherwise they've faced the following seeds in the championship game: 3, 8, 8, 5. They've also generally been lucky with their draws throughout those tournaments, with probably 2014 being the most impressive when they beat a 1,2,3, and 4 as a 7 seed themselves before playing 8-seed Kentucky in the championship.

For the record, they only played one team seeded higher than them (Gonzaga, Elite 8).

Not taking anything away from what they accomplished but this had to be the easiest field of them all. Not a single 1 seed got out of the damn Sweet 16 this year.

2004 Georgia Tech was good. They weren't a powerhouse by any means, but that was a good team they beat in the title game. Also, they took out #1 Duke in the Final Four two days before in an all time classic.
2011 Butler was weird. Brad Stevens getting that team to consecutive title games is an amazing feat.
2014 Kentucky had the resume of an 8 seed, but much like 2022 UNC, they got hot late in the season and finally started playing up to their talent level. That was not an ordinary 8 seed.

That Georgia tech squad was good, and UConn obliterated them. 04 UConn was legit, no doubt about it.
2011 and 2014 are the two worst national champions of my lifetime, I can't think of another team that's close.
2014 lost their last regular season game by 30 points, had a terrible coach, beat an 8 seed for the title, etc. That national title matchup is why many people say the NCAA tournament is a poor way to crown a champion.
2011 was better than 2014. They at least won the big east tourney and were a 3 seed. That said, it was a one man show and the final 4 they participated in was incredibly weak and their title game was the worst of all time.

Up there with 2009 UNC
Eh. I think UNC faced much stiffer competition.

Didn’t they destroy Alabama this year as well?
Posted on 4/4/23 at 7:13 pm to ReauxlTide222
Yeah they took apart Alabama, the overall 1 seed, by 15 at a neutral site. In November, but their overall resume this year should be up there with the great teams IMO.
As someone said it’s like they got bored before the stretch run.
