Kingston was better than Schloss .. Imho ... The ncaa and its scholie rule along with the university not trying to help has killed tulane ...

They now can not afford to miss on a kid and that kid has to stay healthy for them to have a chance. That last part has not happened of late. For example 45% of their scholie money is presently not dressing out due to injury

The scholarship things is terrible. If they're only going to give you 11.7, you should be abled to use it however you want.

I agree but that combined with the transfer rule has really hurt them .. Jones had good luck finding good players whose familes could afford one or two years at tulane but not four. He could get them to play a year or two then convince then to transfer.

Now at $67k a year he has got to try to find good players who can afford that price tag for four years or take a gamble and give him a full ride and pray to jebus he doesnt get hurt. Thats tough to do (IE Randy Leblanc)..

On top of that, the guys have to be smart ..

People bash Rick Jones all the time but with the new rules and lack of commitment from the university, I am not sure there is any coach that can do a better job.

If you take a look at Tulane's rooster from 2005 (Number 1 overall seed in the country), Im willing to bet that at least 65% of those guys could not go to/ or get into tulane today. That is a huge difference ...

I just wanted to reiterate this. I'm not sure I've seen something more ridiculous than that tuition figure before.

Well, other than threeputt's prediction that Tiger would never win another major, that is.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the "university college" at Tulane kind of the loophole to get the less academically qualified students in the door? Not only that, I think the university college tuition was significantly cheaper than the regular Tulane tuition. I think the whole university college ceased to exist after Katrina.

It was also and probably for baseball more importantly....significantly cheaper....the classes at tulane aren't harder......the UC made up for the 11.7 and their regular university's high tuition ...the UC was shut down post katrina......

And the wave has not been a threat since

I think the UC tuition was around 8-12 grand a year, which is doable for the middle/upper middle class baseball player from LA or TX. The 50-60k a year makes these recruits not an option anymore.

While UC helped a little, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned one of the, if not THE, biggest reason Jones sucks now.

You can trace it back to when they stopped letting him use the Legislative Scholarships to give 6-8 more scholarships than any other team in the country. He used these things to recruit kids for YEARS. When they stopped letting him use these, the program slowly started to deteriorate.

What do you consider a very long time? I want to say it was 07 or 09 when the minimum of a 25% scholarship rule came in to play. If you consider that a very long time, then sure it's been that way for a very long time.

No, before recently a school could give a player any amount of money (no matter how small or how big percentage wise) that they agreed on. And it did not matter how many guys that you gave money to on the rooster. Now a coach can only give money to 25 players and each player that gets money, must get at least 33% value of a full ride.
