If you wanna complain about baseball, try playing junior golf

those expenses far exceed any baseball tournament team

Bingo

That's what our parents did for Legion ball, and it allowed us travel around like big pimps in that White Sox buss. We also had pimp-arse uniforms, and a shite-ton of extra money. My dad worked Bingo once a week, and we never had to spend a dime.

So, you're nephew is playing for Scotty and Bill?

I've always liked 'ol Tim. The first Legion game our class ever played was in Camden, Arkansas our freshman years. Coach Keifenheim wasn't there, so Tim had to coach. He got booted in like the 1st inning, and we didn't have another coach, so we had to coach ourselves. Welcome to Legion ball, boys.

I'll give you the other side of the story. It doesn't have to be a scam and travel/select baseball can be a very positive thing. My son is now a sophomore in high school and member of the baseball team. He played travels baseball for 5 years from age 9 to 13. Our team never had a try out and was originally put together by our coach selecting kids who could play but more importantly PARENTS he could see himself spending 10-13 weekends with. We became one of the top teams in the state of LA playing in USSSA Majors. We traveled all over the southeast, to St. Louis, Tulsa, and Cooperstown, NY where we finished 5th out of 96 teams. Now, my point isn't the success the kids had on the field rather the success of the team off the field. Fours dads coached the team and received no compensation. Outside of a few corporate sponsors (very little money) the parents paid everything. The kids were taught how to play the game the right way, with class. Most of the teams we played were like the one you described, paid coaches, open tryouts and kids were cut if they didn't perform. Kids were treated like free agents in pro sports. It was a great experience and every kid on our team is now playing high school ball and still loving it. The bond they formed will last forever. It doesn't have to be a bad thing.

Yeah. The difference after just 8 months is amazing. They played in the 11-12 year old division as 9 year olds this past fall at Biedenharn and lost 1 game I believe. His pitching has really come around.

Read bighead's reply. My son is on a 10u travel team and our team was formed a year ago under the same circumstances bighead described. Matter of fact, our team seems to mirror his team in every aspect he described. Not all teams are formed and ran in the way that was described by the original poster. We are called a travel team but play mainly close to our homes. We travel once a year at the end that requires an overnight stay as a treat to the boys and families. Kind of like a miniature vacation. Our goal is to still be together once they come of age and trave to Cooperstown. We are labeled as a travel team but this team was formed of families and not players.

Also I agree with what he said, it's not imperative for future success. I can only speak for my nephew and all he does is go to school, do his homework, and concentrate on football or baseball depending on the season. He's either hitting off of a tee and his pitching machine and then throwing through an old tire we set up for him. The tournament baseball actually takes up less time for him because they don't play Dixie ball. They have practices a couple of times a week and travel on the weekends. Out of the 13 tournaments, I think they stayed in a hotel 3-4 times. The rest of them were all local.

Edited to add that this is all his doing as far as the way he practices. My uncle never played ball and doesn't push him at all. My aunt is the same, never played an organized sport. My uncle's oldest son didn't play either. He was into motorcross. To clear up the whole Uncle/Nephew question that I'm sure will come up, my aunt married my uncle. Uncle has a daughter my age. She had the kid when she was 18 or so. He lives with my aunt/uncle. They've asked me to help him with his athletics and act as a big brother to him and I've gladly done so.

You have to pay for:
-hotel
-tournament entry (6 or more tourneys, depending if you qualify)
-umpires
-baseballs
-jerseys
-the actual park facility

two thousand for spring and summer travel team doesn't sound that bad to me.

If I had to guess my parents paid the same for me.

Not to mention we traveled all over the South playing ball against some good talent...I wouldn't trade anything in the world for it.

We actually played your nephews team last year. We were only a 9AA team but the tournament was an open. The tournament was actually in St. Amant or very close to it, I'm not certain that was the town but anyhow we played them to go to the championship game. The put up a ton of runs on us in the 1st inning, 9 to be exact but in the bottom of the last inning they were winning 11 - 2 and beat us 11-10. They would have still batted in the bottom of the inning but it was still exciting. They apppeared to be a very good and well coached team. Very disciplined and respectful. After the game, the coach all the way on the left of your pic saw me in the parking lot and paid a very nice compliment to our team. I thought those guys were top notch. Our team is called the Blazin' Canes out of Destrehan. We made out fairly successful throughout the season for it being our first year. We ended up winning second in the State tournament in Baton Rough. The tournament was held at Cypress Mounds.

What shocked me was they all hit behind the runner. I first thought they were just behind on the pitcher, but the kid wasn't throwing that hard.

That's Tim O'Neal, Neville's head baseball coach.

it's unacceptable IMO

you're not developed at all and basically you're spending the money so your kid can wear a fitted hat with his name stitched in it

at 14-16 then I can understand a little bit more, but not before that

Again, it all depends on what type of organization your involved in and why you joined. My son is learning the game at such a young age on a level that rec ball can in no way offer. No he's not going to the majors but I enjoy watching competitive ball.
