It still isn't an out of place prediction to be fair.

To be fair, you ask the question. A lot of people start at one school and change for all sorts of reasons. A lot have to settle for a different school altogether for all sorts of reasons as well. A lot of people have horrible experiences at the school they still manage to graduate from. Without know these things it is hard to really draw any conclusions.

It is fair to say that all large schools get fans who never attended. Without those fans and the monetary support they bring, those same schools would not have the financial wherewithal to have the types of facilities they have.

Is I get older, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt, I may have impulsively reacted to the post questioning what sort of person I am. I'm I may also be getting a little curmudgeonly in my old age

Exactly.

Why it wasn't a bad prediction for that guy to make.

It's just my opinion. I love my school, and I grew up pulling for them due to family.
But If I went to the UNC (the school i wanted to go to but didnt get in) I wouldn't be a gamecock fan.

That may be a little different. UNC USC has always been a bit of a rivalry. UL/LSU has not and any rational Cajuns fan knows that. Sure, they'd like to knock big brother down a peg but they know it's not happening in football (haven't ever score a touchdown vs LSU).

ETA: Imagine you had gone to Coastal Carolina instead of the school you wanted to go to. Do you think you'd be a fan of both schools then?

graduates of ULL were donating money to other schools?

Yikes!

Yeah. The previous university administrators basically ran a small time good ole boys network. Ray Authment was university president from 1974-2008.

As I've been told, Dr. Authment wasn't high on specifically earmarked donations. Everything went into the University Foundation fund (overseen by Authment and other administrators) and then they would decide what funds got released.

I've shared this story before but some years ago, the program that I graduated from received a donation of a money generating physical asset from a large company. The physical asset was intended to be used as a learning tool for the program and the monies generated would fund expenses in the program throughout the year (sending students to conferences or professional events etc)q. Well that asset went to the University foundation, as did the monies generated and the head of the program would have to submit a proposal to them every year detailing how much money would be needed, how it would be spent and so on. Sometimes it would be released, sometimes not.

It was really one guy at this company that did all the heavy lifting to facilitate this donation. Ultimately the donation amounted to beans for this company, they took their PR pictures from it and moved on and didn't care. I've heard from the guy who secured the donation and he was just disgusted with how it was mismanaged from its original intent of being a program changing donation to something that releases a few funds once or twice a year.

Sorry for the novel but it kind of shows you the atmosphere that was set in that era. If you donated to something specific and felt like your donation was mismanaged, would you continue to donate?

Fair enough, what if you had attended 1 year at USC with 7 ro 8 of you high school friends then transferred to wofford because of family obligations? Meanwhile all of your friends stay at LSU several going on to graduate school one even becoming a professor at the school. And then your 2 youngest start to go to USC. Would your perspective be different?

Of course. There was no athletic booster fund to donate to until 2008. Many graduates and supporters tried to get one started since the EIGHTIES, but Ray Authement (the one who with Ray Blanco hired Jerry Baldwin in a 100% politics move, despite the AD wanting to interview other candidates) always said NO WAY.

In fact, Authement made it known to head coaches who would seek private donations for their sports that certain donors were off limits. In his opinion, if certain big academic donors had extra money to give, it should be only to academics. Don’t ask them for athletic donations. Dude not only didn’t support athletics, he despised them and actively stifled the growth.
