Sounds more like a HC person complaining about not winning and believing championships are possible in a lower level.

I doubt there are any decision makers willing to take that step without the desire to compete at level coming from alumni/donors.

If HC wants to be 4A, it has to be the alumni who are so proud of being in the Catholic League to change their tune.

should they be letting those people run the school though?

It’s easy for an alumnus to tell current high school kids to go play bigger and better schools when they’re not putting themselves at risk

It was absolutely the right move for Shaw and DLS

I’m an alumnus with a kid currently attending the school. HC does not want to move down because of tradition. It's that simple. We are already the only major Catholic school in the area that relocated their campus after Hurricane Katrina, and many of our traditions have already been affected. The alumni base—and especially the current administration—will not support voluntarily moving to a lower classification.

If you want to really get into it, none of the traditional Catholic League schools should technically be in 5A. Not a single one meets the typical enrollment mark of 1,000+ students. District 9-5A has long been exempt from that requirement because the schools are not co-ed. At this point, Karr and Easton are the only schools that meet the requirements.

Beyond football, Holy Cross competes at a high level across nearly every other sport. It is not just about football.

Enrollments get doubled for single sex schools… Jesuit and Brother Martin are comfortably 5A and St. Aug, Rummel, Shaw, HC, and Rummel are always near the line one way or the other

Right. No traditional Catholic League school meets 5A standards without the district exception.

You said it but you were wrong which is impressive to do. Do you think same sex schools shouldn't have their enrollment doubled when being classified alongside coed schools? That moronic. Both Jesuit and Brother Martin are both comfortably 5a as far as classification goes.

That applies to all single sex schools in the state, not just the Catholic League

WTF are you talking about? Get the chip off your shoulder, muchacho.

BM and Jesuit are comfortably 5A with the exemption. Without, they'd be a few hundred short.

Jesuit and Brother Martin are 100% 5A size.

Coed schools with 1000+ enrollments have boy and girls sports.

Thus, it’s better to think of them as schools with 500+ enrolled.

Likely don’t use actual figures (a school might be >60% girls for example) for simplicity and administration constraints.

It's not a "district exception." It's the LHSAA rule for single-sex schools.

If it's a "district exception," how is Catholic High in 5A?

Oh, and it's not an "exemption" either.

Why would any of the schools want this "exemption"?

If they were all 4A enrollment, they would be happy to play in 4A and you could put the old XI-AAAA back together, which would be glorious.

Jesuit is 6-4 vs HC in last 10 football meetings. That looks a little more like a rivalry.

When I went to HC in the late ‘70s/early ‘80s, Jesuit was the historic rivalry. They’ve been playing each other continuously since 1922.
Chalmette was also a big rival back then since around 40% of HC’s enrollment was from da Parish. I’d rather see HC losing in the Catholic League than winning elsewhere. It’s tradition.

Poorly chosen words by me. Not a district exemption but every school in the district, minus the 2 public schools, utilize the single-sex enrollment rules.

None of the Catholic League schools want to play down minus Shaw. They won a football state championship playing down so good for them. It’s the only sport that’s so lopsided right now. I’m surprised JT Curtis hasn’t been screaming from I-10.

They utilize the single sex rules because they are single sex schools. Would it make you feel better if Brother Martin and Mt. Carmel combined for a new school with 2100 students?

The schools don't utilize the enrollment rule, they are required to abide by it. Big difference.

How do schools "play down"? Is that something new?

If you mean that Shaw chooses not to play up, De La Salle belongs in that conversation as well.
