Exercising his right to not be a prop for an Obama PR event/photo opportunity. Good for him. He will probably end up catching a lot of flak for it though.

Yeah, nothing beats posing with a hockey team for good PR.

It's a tradition. Nothing more, nothing less.

I think the thing that bothers me the most is it takes away from his teammates. If he was honored individually and then decided he didn't want to go, then OK (though I do think it's disrespectful). But now it's proven a distraction to his teammates when they should be getting one of the greatest honors they ever receive and when they look back at photos of the even in remembrance of their team later in life, the one guy who's not there will stand out.

Like I said, I'm a BIG Thomas fan, but I think he's wrong here.

I'm OK with either side on this. You might think it's his right and that there's nothing wrong with what he chose to do. You might think he's a douche for putting himself above his team and overshadowing a benign celebration. I can see both arguments, I have no problem either way.

We do have a problem, however, if your reaction to this is different--one way or the other/positive or negative--from your reaction to when Rasheed Wallace did the same thing to GWB when the Pistons won it all. If your reaction is different, then you are a hypocrite and you suck.

Yes, because Obama invented this tradition of inviting championship winning teams to the White House specifically for this election year.

only because others decided to make an issue of him not going, if he didn't want to go, don't go, who cares what reason is.

Nobody said Obama invented this tradition. But if you think that this wasn't initially done by some past president as a photo op to be used in a later campaign then I have some oceanfront property in Nebraska to sell you.

So, its not his fault how others choose to react, that's on them.

Didn't he sexually assault his baby sitter?

I would say when you know what's going to happen, it is.

This wasn't a Obama pep rally. Him showing up wouldn't mean he's an Obama supporter. If that was the case, I would agree with him. It was HONORING him and his teammates with a simple ceremony, which he knew was going to turn into a big deal by him not attending, which isn't fair to his teammates.

That makes no sense, he can't help how others feel, if he doesn't want to go, he shouldn't go, no matter the reason. If he doesn't want to go, why should others care? Now if him not going meant no one got to go, then ok, its on him, but if all the others get to go, and be honored who cares if 1 guy doesn't go? Its other people that are making this about Thomas. If they had a dinner to hand out the rings and he didn't go, would anyone care?

Why is it a "big deal" that he didn't go?

Actually, Thomas is going to make an announcement on his facebook page to detail his reasons. He is also making it a big deal. this isn't an accident, he is most certainly seeking attention.

This. I don't like Obama, but if my team won a championship and was invited I would go and not make a stink about it because it's a team event and meant to honor a championship that you and many others players, coaches, trainers, etc worked your asses off for. He's basically seizing the moment in an attempt to make a political statement, if I was a teammate I'd be kinda pissed.

To be fair, I'd rather go pick up chicks at a high school prom than go to the White House.

Was Chmura allowed to go? Serious question, I forgot when the incident happened but that might have been the case.

how could anyone have a problem with this? Outside of not being there with your team, that article got it right I think. It's his choice and that's what's great about this country.

+1. I could care less if anyone chooses to go the white house or not.
