Atlanta continues to move up, but NHL wants to make sure Arena is in best place possible, and best access to fans. NHL believes arena placement is why the flames and thrashers failed.

Well good news is the arena is in the area with high disposable income and the best population to support a hockey team.

Arena placement has ZERO to do with why the Thrashers left. The ownership group Atlanta Spirit that bought Philips Arena and the Hawks were forced to take the Thrashers in the deal. They never wanted them and treated them like the proverbial red headed stepchild. I will also say the Dany Heatley car wreck that killed Dan Snyder also played a large part in the Thrashers demise.

It’s makes the NHL/Bettman look less crappy to blame “arena placement” than “we were dumb enough to approve ASG as owners 20 years ago.”

Bad news is that the infrastructure blows at GA 400/McGinnis Ferry (even with the new interchange), and the chances of MARTA rail ever going that far north are slim to none.

Yeah. Because Mexicans hate violent sports with frequent fighting.

Its the main reason WHY Houston should get a team. It is a completely untapped demographic that has been proven to have no issues about spending a lot of their discretionary income attending live sporting events.

I have no dog in this fight, but what is wrong with Fertitta? Since buying the Rockets, he seems to have limited himself to writing checks for Toyota Center upgrades, is building a state of the art (arent they all) practice facility and staying out of the way otherwise. He also funded an awesome remodel of Hofhienz for UH. Granted, he slapped his name on it, but if I bought the thing, I would put my name on it as well.

He is just a giant POS. Yes, he is doing all those upgrades but I doubt he is paying for it. He is always stiffing people in construction around the HTown area. There is a running joke about when the checks will stop coming if you are on his job. Sounds like his thought process is I can save 25% if I tie this up in a lawsuit and settle. I would love to have a team here but would hate knowing I am giving him money every time I go to a game.

Dude has a $150M yacht at the backdoor of the Landrys in Galveston. At least the chicks didn't have to Uber the next morning.

Am I the only one here old enough to remember way back when Houston had an ice hockey team that featured the (at that time) famous Howe family? Even with publicity, attendance was poor and traffic wasn't as dense then as it is now.

The Houston Rockets (formerly San Diego Rockets) were named to pay homage to the very first ICBM Rocket that was developed in San Diego in the 40's. Not really related to space travel or NASA like many think but it fits so it stuck.
