There’s intentional walks in coaches pitch. Coaches pitch.
The coach that does this should be publicly shamed, and I try to do that from the sidelines, and I don’t care how much of an arse I look like doing it. You’re a fricking pussy arse piece of shite doing that to an 8 year old in any competition.

I get that the kids are competitive and want to win, but I'd be kind of bummed if my kid got walked every time. It's not college or pro.. at the end of the day, they're just out there to have fun.
That’s why adults are supposed to understand that there’s no such thing as genuinely competitive athletics for 10 year olds.

Well its baseball, so...I don't see the big deal.

Kid gets on base...kid probably gets a morale boost thinking he's badass.

And most Little League runs are scored from fielding errors...that's why the Japanese do so well at the LLWS they don't score a shiteton of runs but are fundamentally sound in the field...because they practice non-stop fielding that American teams don't.

So putting a kid on base on purpose is just stupid. A wild pitch and an overthrow (common occurrence) and the kid is sliding home.

You never want someone on base in LL, it's a countdown to what fielding error will score him.

does the kids pitching no good.

I am not sure. Are we worried about the pitcher’s self esteem or not? Walking him shows you think the batter is better than the pitcher. The batter raking every time he’s pitched to is not exactly an esteem building situation for the pitcher either.

Little league is not the same as it was 25-30 years ago. By the age of 11 kids today are competitive and have been for a while. They want to win. I personally think it is obnoxious, but it is the norm.

It's lame at every level of baseball. There should be a penalty much greater than a free base for an intentional walk.

This.

Never knew a kid could be so bad they wouldn’t let him embarrass himself by swinging in tball.

How does a ball sitting on a Tee, intentionally walk the batter? Does the batter have to make 4 pretend swings or something? This is an empirical question of course.

My son played with a kid who was very big for an 8 year old, probably was about 5'2". Boy could hit a ball a mile. In an 8 year old coach pitch tournament his first two at bats of the first game he hit 2 bombs to dead center that cleared an 8' high 220 foot fence. The other coach walked him the rest of his at bats and the next team did the same. Most ridiculous thing I ever saw.

Terrible. That coach is dick. He probably drops wild draw 4 cards on 7 year olds playing UNO.

ou can still walk the kid without an intentional walk being allowed.

You can tell your pitcher to not give him anything to hit but an intentional walk is a dick move.

It's the game. There's really no difference in the above besides your feelings. Baseball at those levels of competition are being coached to win. The boys are there to win. Winning is fun.

i get it, but imo anything below HS that is not some World Series type game has to be inconsequential for the most part.

I am ok with wlaking in a state tourney or above in bracket play.

other than that...its bush league. Doing it in 8u ball is bush league.

its priortizing winning over competing.

even if it sets up a force play at the bases in key spots of a game? its the correct baseball move at times.

i still dont like it. i get it but dont like it.

its been rare for me to see it on anyone other than a big bomber though even if it is the correct play. plus how many 8u teams are turning 2?

by world series there certainly are some, but there are maybe a dozen in the state doing that and thats at the end of the season.

Regardless of the league or age, I think an intentional walk should require that the pitcher throw the 4 balls. It puts pressure on the defense to still throw catchable pitches (which is apparently not a basic task sometimes) plus, as I have witnessed, sometimes a wannabe ball is thrown in reach of the batter that he can put in play.

The new "just put him on" rule is bullshite.

It's 8U.
those kids could give two shits about the correct baseball move. They just want to play baseball, AND THEY WANT TO HIT THE frickING BALL. Intentionally walking an 8 year old is a shitty thing to do under any circumstance.

completely disagree. Many 10 year olds are competitive and ready for high level sports. Many are not but you can lump them all in one category.

BS, no 8 year old is hitting a ball 240 dead center.

lots of good teams. It easier in 8U than 9/10U because you cant get leads and there is no stealing. rolling two in 8u is common for the good teams
