This is the sad new reality in college sports

Its not the players and the coaches anymore driving these high profile recruitments. Its the agents and the donors. The agents come up with entire strategies to maximize NIL, and those strategies often include lying to grown mens faces. Whats even sadder is the players know that the coaches do it for themselves all the time. They don't blink about getting in front of the media and just straight up lying to improve their negotiations. Great example they've set, now we get to deal with it in every high profile recruitment. It just aint as fun as it used to be. Credit to any player that could squeeze schools for $$$ but make their decision based on the name on the front of the uniform and not the back.

Easy for us to say who are LSU fans. Flip the scenario and say we have a kid that wants to leave LA to go to a different school. We all crucify him for not wanting to play for “us”

You had scoop on Simmons. What’s the deal?

Would you say at the end of the day, elite players go where they want to go still?

I think the $$$ has already gotten so high they don’t really think like that anymore. I think its similar to a Louisiana kid who would love to play for the Saints but in reality just wants to get drafted as high as possible.

Nope. Just one example is Jacoby Matthews. He wanted to come to LSU but ended up going to 8&4 because his parents got more money from them

If you’ve followed Simmons’ recruitment, family was always going to be a huge driving factor. LSU did what they could, but UT is closer to home. Under 3 hours from home to UT and around 7 hours to LSU.
Any time you’re starting a recruitment from behind the 8 ball like that, it’s difficult to close.
Even if you get them on campus, it’s hard to keep them happy. Najee Harris talked about going to Bama and how for awhile he was flying home to California almost every weekend.

This is why, despite still having great recruiting, Saban is always so pissy about NIL. He spent a decade building up the greatest reputation of all time that recruits itself, and that’s been thrown out of the window overnight.

He just landed the best recruiting class of all time just 7 months ago

I think that was an exaggeration. Especially given that he experienced homelessness as a child growing up. Not a lot of flying money. When Najee came to Tuscaloosa in 2017 his mother relocated here as well. He did speak of homesickness, which for a freshman, was more or less typical. He also didn't think he was used enough his freshman year and wanted to leave.
But there was no magic portal to just get into and those 18-year-old feelings eventually left. And guess what? Not only did he stick it out, he signed up for a senior season at ALABAMA to boot. And won the Doak Walker and another NC. And was a first-round pick of Pittsburg.

This all went on the 80's and 90's as well. The only difference is there wasn't a cottage industry of recruiting coverage. Thus, the public didn't know every daily detail of the various recruits. In many ways, NIL has brought the negotiations that have long been a part of recruiting into the light.
Point being, stuff like this still would have happened. It's just the people involved wouldn't have been as up front about it.
If he turns down an additional $50k or $100k to go to "your school" and ultimately gets hurt, or doesn't play much, are you going to reimburse him the money he walked away from? Many, many of these kids are coming from homes/backgrounds where money is not abundant. If some college booster is willing to give him a 6 figure payday to attend the booster's alma mater who am I to tell the kid to turn that down just so I can be happy he chose my favorite school? That could be life changing money for that kid and his family. And given how tough it is to make it to the NFL, that might be his best and only opportunity to ever "earn" so much money in his lifetime.
Does it stink as a fan that the "big money" schools can get the best players by simply cutting the biggest check? Of course. But that was the case LONG before NIL

On the flip side, players still want and need playing time and that is always gonna play a part.
A NIL deal does nothing to help your draft status or ability to play in NFL which is still where the real money is at.
You have to go somewhere where you can showcase that talent and if Texas has four five star QB's on the roster at the same time what gives.

'Selling' a recruit to the highest bidder is nothing new.
Bama boosters paid 200,000 for Albert Means back in 98. 25 years later a 5x increase for top players is not that much considering HC salaries have gone up more than 10x.

Soooo, you DON’T like capitalism? I’m confused here. Nothing is more “American” than what’s going on in s college sports today.

It’s always been like this… now it’s just open to the public
Don’t fool yourself into thinking these players are just now getting money
