Ironic how many people lose their minds(especially announcers) when the multitude of fouls that are NFL / College auto first downs are not awarded automatically in HS.
in HS it's only roughing passer, snapper, kicker or holder.

That and we all have been conditioned to check for flags before getting excited after a big play.

the league wants offense
the defensive holding prevents WR muggings down the field

It's hilarious to see dudes melt because they don't know the hs rules.
I saw a guy this year almost have a heart attack when his team intercepted a 2 point attempt and the refs blew it dead. He was convinced the refs were bought and paid for by the other team.

My biggest gripe with penalties is offensive holding. You can call it on every play but its happened to all of our teams when a holding is called that is on the other side of the field that negates a big play. Drives me nuts when that happens. Refs should have to answer questions after each game by the media on what they saw and why they did or not throw a flag.

The game has been engineered to give the offense every advantage so that there aren’t a ton of low scoring games that women won’t watch.

I'm probably missing something and taking a short-sighted look at it but I've never understood why penalties in football have automatic 1st downs or half the distance.
3rd and 20 with a 15 yard penalty on the defense...it's 3rd and 5.
Ball on the 11 with a 10 yard penalty...it's on the 1

Someone might want to chart the holding calls that negate would=be-game-changing receptions and runs.
Last night there might have been a holding declined, but most time it makes the world first and twenty and that's a lot harder.

quote:Off-topic, but that tripping penalty in the Falcons/Bucs game was a good move by the defender (he also got a facemask call). The Falcons RB walks into the endzone otherwise.
There’s little reason that holding or tripping should be an auto first
If I'm a defender and it's first and goal, and you give up an auto-first (and half the distance, so maybe 2-3 yds) to prevent a TD, I do that every time.

or a turnover in OT

The CBA has a lot to do with it. The off-season restrictions on practice time - especially the extremely limited contact allowed - means teams aren't near as well-tuned or -conditioned. Plus, starters almost never play the preseason. Makes for much more sloppy play.

Looks like Redskins at Bills

Offsides is basically the only penalty that doesn’t give the offense an automatic first down.

Nothing worse than 3rd and 18, and a 5 yard illegal contact, on othr side of field, away from the play some how makes that 3rd and 18 a 1st.

Its the easiest drive-extending call to make.

shite is unwatchable nowadays and the problem is nobody is gonna turn it off to make them think it needs to change.
I'll keep a game on because I don't want to change the channel but I rarely continuously watch a game because it's impossible.
