I knew that would happen. The same thing occurred after the 4 Nations Faceoff last year. Many casuals disappear as soon as the event is over.

I'll watch an entire gold medal us women's basketball game, and cheer if we win.

Just in. More people watched the US play in the World Cup than the MLS championship game.

Yeah, it didn't last that long after the 1980 gold medal either.
Should the US do well in Soccer I would expect any bump to be short lived as well.

All that tells me is that 5.9 million people watched a great series. Good for them!
The NHL is still healthy as a league. All hockey fans realize it’s not for everyone. But we don’t understand how people still think it’s some sort of exotic sport that no one loves. I mean, it’s been around more than 100 years. TV ratings aren’t going to sink it. Most of its revenue comes from ticket sales. Its salary cap keeps going up because the money keeps going up. What’s the problem?

Hockey will always naturally have a lower ceiling than the other 3 major sports when it comes to casual viewership. Everyone played tee ball as a kid, or played pick up basketball or threw a football around the backyard, drive around any neighborhood in the country and you'll quickly find basketball courts or baseball diamonds. The amount of kids who ever played hockey or even had access to hockey equipment, especially ice hockey, is significantly lower. I live in a city with an NHL team and there's maybe 10 ice rinks in the entire metro area. Its just not a very accessible game to play for most of the country. People just dont grow up with a connection to the sport like they do with football, basketball and baseball.
Considering all that though the sport is doing just fine and gets good ratings for being such a relatively niche game.

Was highest since post covid but 2019 still edges it in average viewers
Side note, the last 4 Stanley cup finals Buffalo has had the highest TV market

Why would you expect an NHL finals of Carolina and Vegas to have higher views than series with the Knicks, UConn and the Dodgers?
It was an incredible NHL finals, who the hell cares if more people watched the NBA finals just like always.

IMO I'm a stars fan and I find it difficult to be invested in any hockey game that they (or team USA) aren't playing in

I'll casually watch a random NFL or college game, but I can't watch, say, Mets v Phillies or Lakers v Knicks. I just don't care.
I'll watch a random SC Playoffs game, though.

Womens college gymnastics is legit. The wifey and I have been into it for 7-8 years now and it's become probably my favorite college sport behind football. I hate OU gymnastics more than I hate Bama football

As a 30-year NHL diehard-I view it differently. First of all, becoming an NHL fan to an existing sports fan usually means giving up another sport because of time constraints. I don't hate the NBA, but I gave it up because I only have so much time for spectator sports. It's about time. So, attracting new fans will always be difficult. Second of all, NHL fans tend to be super knowledgeable about the game and enjoy the lack of casual fans. It's a great sport, has the easiest to relate to and humble athletes, the playoffs are insanely good and those of us who get it are just happy to be in on the secret.

This is like saying LSU baseball won draws 11,000 for a game at the Box. The FB team draws 100K
5.9M maybe be terrible or great numbers for hockey, it’s all relative
