New to the sport, but that’s basically how this goes, right? He got those offers from bigger teams because he was a great driver. Plenty of guys have gone to the team with the best car and not won a world championship.

It’s surprising to me that those switches/dials aren’t digital.

Feel. They aren't looking at the wheel.

Yes and no. Jumping to a winning team definitely happens.

There are plenty of drivers that jump then the team makes their cars the best. Schumi to Ferrari and HAM to Merc are some examples.

Hopefully RIC to Renault is the same. Imagine the shoeys.

Disagree with both examples. Hamilton went to Mercedes when he knew McLaren was about to go over the cliff, but Mercedes had the third best car at the time behind Red Bull and Ferrari.

When Schumacher went to Ferrari they were in the midst of a long span of building dogs and it had been over 15 years since Ferrari won either a WCC or WDC. Ferrari had been the Keystone Cops of Italy. It wasn't until Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne that came with Michael from Benneton really got their hands dirty building a team and a car and Michael developed it did Ferrari become the Ferrari of old.

In today's F1 top-level drivers have a hard time jumping to the top team since they almost always already have a top driver and F1 has learned through the lessons of Prost/Senna and Alonso/Hamilton* two world-class drivers aren't necessarily the best option. It seems to be much better to have one top-level driver and one younger one (though the ones in top teams will be already proven) to develop. Ferrari went outside this with LeClerc but he is an unusually solid freshman bet.

* Bringing Hamilton in with Alonso wasn't a bad call at the time but nobody expected him to cause Alonso the fits he did breaking down the team morale.

HAM left Mclaren Mercedes that was probably the 3rd best car on the track, maybe 2nd. Mercedes was clinging to 5th. He was nearly a 2 time world champion with that team. The move to Mercedes was a huge chance, it paid off.

Michael went with the whole team to Ferrari and it was a risk, maybe not as big.

Neither of those teams had winning cars just looking to seal the deal with a great driver.

HAM definitley caused Alonso fits, but Alonso caused the team fits. Then torpedoed his whole career. No one was going to touch him after what he did.

Agreed that teams have learned to not let their drivers be equals. Only bad shite happens when they do that.

That series is seriously good television. The characters are amazing. And the comments they get out of people, the honesty.

It’s going to create a lot of new Formula One fans.

I was amazed at how many people are on a team, and even more amazed that teammates don’t work together. I would be pissed if I owned a team and my drivers kept running into each other or blocking the other one from passing, but it appears that is the accepted behavior.

I wonder if they will turn future race seasons into shows as a way to build up the sport, especially here in the US.

The onboard cams from the driver's perspective are phenomenal. You see everything. The quick and short steering is amazing.

The cardinal rule is that teammates don't run into each other. The teams usually let them race but if they can't play nice, then the team will dictate who can pass whom when. Force India (now Racing Point) had that problem the last couple of years. Their drivers seemed unable to avoid each other so the team stepped in and basically said we'll tell you when you can pass.

Also later in the season teams will sometimes prioritize one driver over the other. Let's say Vettel is in the hunt for the drivers championship but Leclerc isn't. Leclerc is running 2nd in a race and Vettel is behind him. Ferrari might tell Leclerc to let Vettel by so that he will get more points.

I still think Fangio was the best pure driver.

I would vote for Jim Clark.

It's just so very hard to compare drivers from different eras.
