Jefferson Parish and state officials are discussing transforming the stadium, built in 1997, from one fit for mostly for baseball into a rectangular alignment that would allow it to host more high school football, rugby, soccer and concerts.

The renovation could include putting artificial turf down as well as adding stands along the field's eastern side, in what is now right and center fields. Preliminary renderings show single-level stands with a flat cover to provide shade. Other amenities, such as expanded concession areas, could also be added, they said.

One use that's not likely for the 10,000-seat stadium? Professional baseball.

Minor League Baseball is "not sustainable here," Bonano said.

A redesigned Shrine could also be used to lure other professional sports teams. Parish officials have met with a consultant who is studying the viability of professional minor league soccer in the area.

One potential candidate would be a team in the United Soccer League, which is a step below Major League Soccer and in the midst of a rapid expansion. The league has recently added teams in El Paso, Birmingham and Memphis.

It certainly was when you had the Astros affiliate here - not so much when you got teams that nobody local cared about like the Marlins and Mets. And lets not get into that horrendous name change that killed it off...

Putting it in a better location would help a lot too. I’m not saying a park would have to be built directly downtown but closer to the core of New Orleans would help a lot. Louisiana probably has one of the highest baseball popularity rates, per capita, in the country. At minimum higher than average. Minor league baseball should be successful in NOLA if done right

Agree.

Hard part is downtown is the ideal location and land is way too expensive to be worth it for a minor league park.

The Uptown NIMBYs wouldn't allow Turchin.

I recall JP saying they would upgrade the concessions at Yenni and Memtsas and make their scoreboards the biggest in the South lol…

That story came out last July and they said they would start work after soccer was done in February

In that story they said it themselves. They wanted more teams from Orleans to use their stadiums, since they said JP kids were on those teams

Why does he think that? Is it cause people didn’t want to see the shitty baby cakes in an old outdated piece of crap?

went to a lot of zephyrs games back then, and we always had a good time. Several times we had employee parties at the pool area. There were prospects we followed and we watched call ups, etc.

they killed it, not us

I think a minor league stadium on the West Bank overlooking the downtown skyline would be great. Add a walking/biking bridge to connect the two sides and revitalize that area

MLB took away 42 minor league teams a couple of years ago. each team only has 4 now. no new teams are coming, all you could hope for is for one to move.

I’d imagine it would be extremely expensive to build a bridge like that, plus it would have to be so high for ships to fit under it that it would be way too difficult to bike up and down.

They should not spend another $0.01 of tax payers’ money on the boondoggle.

Sell the land and build a Costco.

Agreed.

If no baseball team is coming, bulldoze the stadium and make it green space or commercial.

Probably the gayest name ever used in pro sports and I don't say that lightly.
