“Keep Him Away From the Sorority Girls.” Inside Lane Kiffin’s Trash-Talking, “Joey Freshwater” Era With Nick Saban at Alabama
quote:

“You’ve got to keep Lane away from the girls that are in college,” Saban said, according to one former coach. “Just keep him away from the sorority girls. Make sure they’ve graduated college or are working a job.”
quote:

Early that next morning, Saban made the decision: “I’m firing the cocksucker.”

Love him or fear him (and I love him), here's the Alabama chapter of the History of The Lane Train.

It's a paywall, but we all know how to get around that.

I’d say they do it because they know our fans will swallow the hook like the goobers they are.

For different reasons, but when Saban got to Alabama he was being decimated in the media for leaving Miami. And he was 100% labeled a job hopper, until he wasn’t. People change in their 50’s.

Let's simplify it.

Lane is probably a douche.
Lane is a good coach.

Good coach > douche

True. Though the criticism for leaving Miami was mostly directed towards the "I will not be the next coach at Alabama" press conference as I recall. But he had a history, and was heavily suspected to leave Alabama for Texas after only a few years there.

Lane Kiffin has had 7 jobs in the last 20 years. He was fired from 2 of them. One was a clear promotion from OC to HC. He deserves criticism for how he left Tennessee, but I don't think anyone could argue that at the time USC was absolutely his dream job. And some criticism for how he left Ole Miss is fair as well.

In the 20 years prior to taking the Alabama job Nick Saban had 6 jobs, never staying more than 5 years at any one of them. He jumped back and forth between the NFL and college 3 times, and left Toledo after just one season.

Not really. There were zero scenarios where he could have left Ol' Miss for LSU (or Florida for that matter) without it turning into the shitshow it did.

How exactly could CLK have handled that job change better?

Why?

Pete Carroll didn't leave USC for Seattle until January 10th. So it is not like Lane could have taken the job any sooner. I doubt he had any intention to leave Tennessee...until the USC job became available. And at that time USC was a much stronger program. Tennessee was on a downward trajectory. USC was still among the top 5 programs in the nation.
