They should probably use independent doctors, right? I’m sure that will work

Knowing the way the NFL works, the “independent” doctor they would hire would be Bill Belichick’s nephew.

The Dr and HC cannot let the player back on the field following an obvious concussion. Someone has to have the balls to say no.

It's all the doctor

If the doctor gives the OK, why wouldn't the HC consider playing Tua? Tua was literally just cleared by a doctor

Nonsense. His job is to rely on the medical expertise of his training staff and NFL specialists. If he’s told Tua isn’t concussed then he has no business overruling. He’s not a physician.

The whole purpose of protocol was to remove decision-making power from the coaching staffs

Exactly.

If you add a regulatory layer, then people in he system will rely on that layer

Because any sane person could see he was concussed.

HC can hide behind ignorance.

So if the coach thought he was concussed and returned him to play, based on the medical evaluation, he would hold zero responsibility?

Yeah, like seeing him shake cobwebs then collapse to the fricking ground. I guess 8 years of med school failed him

Yeah the HC has to defer to docs. If the doc is a moron? Well…..

Just to clarify this thread, the NFLPA has fired the consultant.

That's why you add the step. The coach isn't a doctor.

Way to dodge the question.

The reality is that physicians in pro sports aren't hired to keep the players safe. They're there to keep them on the field.

If physicians were making treatment recommendations consistent with modern medical training and those recommendations were followed, NFL teams would have difficulty fielding competitive rosters.

Is the independent Dr someone who both the NFL and the NFLPA have to agree on?

Edit: just read that it was the NFLPA that dismissed the doctor.
quote:

The source said the NFL Players Association exercised its right to dismiss the consultant. The NFLPA and the league each have the right to fire a UNC without agreement from the other party.

quote:

The NFLPA exercised its right to initiate a review of the league's concussion protocol in response to Tagovailoa's quick return to Sunday's game. A source told ESPN's Dan Graziano that the UNC was interviewed Friday as part of that investigation.

I know it was a Thursday game this week, but the NFLPA was complaining and talking about reviewing decision right after the Sunday game against the Bills. Knowing next game was Thursday why wait to interview the doctor until Friday?

That is correct, the coach holds zero responsibility when a player is cleared by a doctor.

This has been the North Star for every tard on the internet defending Tua playing - it’s clear he shouldn’t of come back in the Bills game and again 4 days later.

It’s a lack of common sense.

It's been an open secret that Pro Sports doctors, "independent" or not...because they're really still paid by the team or league, have been a joke.

On retainer to just put the stars back in the game.

Bill Walton sued and won his malpractice claim against the Trailblazers. And there have been countless others who have sued.
