TAMU 1989 was better.
That has happened a bunch. Who says they were “dominant”. Again, they didn’t play any tough series on the road and avoided Arky, TAMU and LSU - NINE frickING GAMES OF 30 had they played them. They would have taken more losses.

Arkansas last year. They lost to NC State who then had Vandy pull some shenanigans to knock NC St from CWS

South Carolina went 25-5 in 2000 and lost to ULL and their frosted tips

Indeed. 56-10 overall.

At least ULL did us a solid and went on to knock Clemson out of the CWS.

Remember when Skip moved Big Ben from the mound to left field in case A&M started to rally. Those old 6 team regionals were the best.

Question about the 6 team regionals… what was the most possible games you could play in one?

Would they be feasible nowadays?

The math doesn't work Was eight 6 team regionals, now there's 64 teams.

They played 3 games every day the first 3 days in the old 6-team regionals. I don’t remember, but somewhere along the way, they probably played 4 in one day if a game or two or more got rained out or delayed.

If the field ever expanded to 96, you’d get 6-team regionals back. No thanks.

They would be feasible. Just the if games would get weird

You have if 5 teams or if 3 teams remain games

Plus you get loser of 1-6 playing winner of 3/4

Florida 2014 is possibly worse. While they didn't break records, they won the SEC at 21-9, was the #2 National Seed, and went 0-2 in the Regional.

That year was weird, though. Only 2 of the 8 national seeds made it to the CWS.

The if necessary game was usually the first game of Sunday unless the 3-4 loser beat the 1-6 winner on day 2. If the loser champ won that game, the if necessary game followed immediately after that. That’s how LSU beat A&M twice in College Station in ‘89.

Remember, in the old 6-team format, the regional started on a Thursday. They played 9 games in 3 days (3 every day) to get to Sunday

ETA: sms had it correct below. Edited my post to include that.

Yes the loser of 1-6 played winner of 3/4 game 1 on day 2 which then made the 3rd game possible. But there were times you ever knew the schedule. I liked that format. We played MVC in regional formats as well. We were used to it. I think they went back to it in a form after 5/8 6/7 playin games now

I have no problem with people piling on Tennessee because of how everything unfolded but to act like we weren’t that good is just ridiculous. I know you think we would have gone 0-9 against LSU, A&M, and Arkansas but it’s just not true. We beat LSU in Hoover and were waiting for A&M and Arky in Hoover but they didn’t last. We won the SEC by 6 games. That’s not a fluke.

Sucks we didn’t finish it off in the NCAA tournament but up until this weekend it’s one of the better seasons in recent memory. Someone can argue there’s better but we were in the discussion. We led the nation in ERA by a large margin and pitched great this weekend outside of 5 innings out of 27. It is what it is but don’t act like we were slaw.

Looking like only 2 will this year, Stanford and Texas A&M. Four 2+seed regional teams are already in the CWS.
