This argument goes out the window when the last two years, teams who didn't win their conference got in.
If the regular season mattered, it would have kept Ohio State out last year and Bama out this year.
Regular season is good enough to determine a conference champ, but not the national champ? Makes sense.

UCF got left out even though they went undefeated and destroyed everyone they played in the regular season
Bama got rewarded for losing to Auburn, didn't have to play Georgia in the SECCG and avoiding a hard game and potential loss.
You can't say a team who didn't even earn the right to play for their conference championship game makes it to the national championship had their regular season matter.

They beat USF by a touchdown.
They beat Memphis in their CCG by a touchdown in double OT.
