Well yes, that's also a dumb rule. It makes so little sense that they had to create an exception for the field goal holder.

Or that time Brad Wing's touchdown against the Gators was nullified for "taunting." Mickey Mouse call.

When you have the ball, 100 yards of the field is "yours."

You are trying to get into the opponent's territory, that is the end zone. If you get in there at all, you score.

When the ball is loose, it is no one's ball. If play stops and it is in "your" territory, you keep the ball.

If you run out of bounds with the ball, you don’t score 6 points. But if you run into the end zone with the ball, you score 6 points. Is that also illogical?

At the end of the play the result is the same, the ball goes out of bounds. In one case the offense gets it back where it was fumbled and the other it’s a turnover. That’s dumb.

Would you also be in favor of giving the defense the ball when a guy fumbles stretching for a first down?

Because the endzone is different than the rest of the field. It's the end goal of any drive. So once the ball reaches there, you better have possession to score points. If you don't, the drive ends.

It goes back to the spot of the fumble when it goes OOB in the middle of the field as an exception to stop cheap fumbles from getting extra yards at the perimeter. If you fumble it in the middle of the field and the offense recovers it before it goes OOB they get it at the spot of the recovery (outside of the 2 minutes in the half, the other exception). But once it crosses the endzone, there's no more advancement to be had so the drive ends, and if the offense never has possession of it in the endzone by the play's end, then the drive ends with no points. Touchback.

This isn't difficult to understand.

The difference in 1 inch is mind blowing.

-Hit the pylon on the backside defense gets the ball on the 20yd line.
-Hit the pylon on the front, offense keeps the ball on the goal line.

You can also be short of a first down by an inch as well, I don't see how that's relevant. Did the play end with the ball advanced in the endzone? If so, did the offense ever possess it while it was in the endzone? If yes, touchdown, if not, touchback. That's really all there is to it

What do you propose they do to penalize the defense for forcing a fumble

No it’s not. It is very consistent with any other touchback by rule.

As a former official, it is proven over and over that most fans have no clue about rules or the critical thinking skills to grasp why a rule exists

False statement. You would have to change the definition of a touchback. Not so simple without creating a domino effect on other rules

Actually it is. It’s the end zone the field of play is between the goal lines and the sidelines.

Clock stopping with a first down. It's ridiculous to see teams run 8 plays and drive the ball the length of the field in 23 seconds.

The dumbest rule in football is a fumble through the end zone results in a change of possession and touchback for the other team. Just place the ball on the five.

How about this… if an incomplete pass breaks the plane of the goal line, what if that was the end of a drive and a touchback?

I think the rule that you are down if your knee touches the ground without someone touching you is worse. Should be the same as the NFL

The college rule is much easier to officiate and thus better, IMO. Same goes for two feet down via one. We complain about NFL officiating so much b/c the rules are so complicated.

Penalizing a player who instinctively continues to play after his helmet comes off is the dumbest rule in college football IMO
