It's just embarrassing to me, that people feel the need to win that badly that they'll cheat in a charity event.

I was the second to last group on a long-drive hole a few years back and poked one out there a few yards past the already long drive.

I watched the last group just pick the sign up from my spot and bring it into the clubhouse. I hope whoever won it from that group enjoyed the $9.99 18-pack of pinnacles.

I would not want to be the guy who failed the test at the boat rams where 100 of his "friends/neighbors" were waiting for the results. Some local events have over 10K worth of cash in them and big events have more

Larger tournaments offset the cheating issue by pairing two people in a both that are strangers. If you were going to cheat then, you would have to convince a total stranger to do it with you or somehow do it without them knowing. Even then it has happened.

But I think its a best cast scenario. Just do as much as you can within reason. Thats pretty much what the poly is for. Not super expensive and it works the majority of the time

I played in a scramble about three years ago. It was a tournament put on by a friend who works the construction business. It was a fairly tough course and we shot -12 along with another team. All the other teams were in a range from -3 to -10. We made two eagles to get up to -12.

A team came in with a card with -17 on it. They won all the cash and prizes. I 100% guarantee they cheated

Only way two 3 man groups works with speed is to play par is your friend.. No need to grind out the random 4 footer for par at that point from the shitty groups.

Had something similar in a casino event tournament I was working at one year. Group of 3 guys were invited and showed up in jean shorts and tshirts. They were last group to come in and turned in a -17 or -18 card.

Before we handed out the money/prizes, the 4th person (a random guy that was put with the 3, ended up confessing to his team cheating)

Made for an interesting awards ceremony. We ended up scheduling 18 casino workers for overtime to come out and keep score for groups in future events. Of course then you always run the risk of a group bribing a scorekeeper when large sums of money are involved. Sucks but just they way some people are.

You could just do a blind team scramble. Everyone is paired into a cart with someone and whomever is riding in the same cart keeps score for the other person. Then, at the end of the event you draw names for teams.

Scrambles always take about 20-30% longer to finish a round. Putting 6 people on each hole will result in at least 6+ hours to finish.

If you play a scramble, you have to expect cheating.

Only way to possibly prevent is to have a marshal tag along with each team.

That wouldn't be a scramble. That would be best ball.

Our golf tournament works great. Hard to cheat.

Bogey is your friend
2-3 man teams on a hole (teams take score for each other)
3 carts per 6 people. 1 player from each team shares a cart.

We haven't had any problems with this format..It's also important to pair the teams up with people they don't know.

It's pretty damn difficult to play a 6 hour long round of golf.

Every round I've ever played on the Am Tour was 5.5-6 hours. When you have to putt everything out, actually play by the rules, plus 150 people on a course, it's not as hard as you think.

One way I've seen tournaments discourage cheating is to actually break the tie for first place with a playoff.

I seen this happen and a group get busted and kicked out of the club.

Best ball scramble. Proceeds went to benefit athletics at a university. The winning team each got two season tickets to all athletic events. Team entry was $5K.

Group 1 came in -22. Group 2 came in -21. A three hole playoff with a shamble format. Use best drive and then play own ball. Group 1 never got better than bogey.

Group 2 happen to be four former members of the university golf team in the late 60's early 70's. The old men kicked arse.

And it's just tough because it makes you not want to play in the tournament again, but it's for charity and that's the most important part of it. I just know I would have a really hard time taking a trophy for something I know I didn't win. Most of the people who should win scramble tournaments normally have probably been raised as golfers, and therefore wouldn't cheat. But some of the guys who don't play a ton golf don't really care. It was pretty evident in that tournament I played though, that those guys would be nowhere near 17 under in any sort of scramble.

I have. It's fun. I would say it does cut down on cheating.

To eliminate cheating, most of the prizes should be door prizes or closest to pin, etc.

I play in a glow-ball scramble every year in which the front 9 is played before dark and the back nine is played in the dark with glow-in-the-dark balls.

Now you would think that no team would be dumb enough to claim that they shot a lower score in the fricking dark, but every year 2-3 teams do. And it's usually the teams that are so drunk they can barely drive their carts.

friend of mine organized a scramble for the local commerce dept, so he decided to make the top 4 teams (out of 30 or so) do a playoff for 1-4 ... so everyone gets to go out and, assuming at least some teams will stick around, show off their 'skills' in front of everyone ... not sure how much cheating that cut down on, but it's a different way of handling it ...
