But yes. The 00s were peak CFB imo and 07 was the GOAT entertainment season.

The 2000s in general were great for CFB. Especially the big 12.

Aside from OU and Texas’ success, Kansas and Missouri were both in the top 5 at one point, at the same time. Kansas.

Texas Tech made it to #1 under Leach in ‘08 before OU dismantled them on national TV.

And of course Miami and USC were dominant at least early in the decade.

That was awesome! I was 10-20 years old from 2000-2010 so that's my choice. That clip made me damn sure of it.

2008-2010. It had Saban and Urban at the height of their powers, schools from non-power conferences like Boise State, Utah, and TCU competing against and beating top programs from power conferences, all-time great players like Cam and Tebow, pretty much all of the tradition rich programs doing well, etc...

The 10 years from 97-06 (the first 9 yrs of the BCS) we saw 10 different national champions.
I got a cooler stat. From 97-07, only one team won 2 championships.

I loved the late '80's to mid '90's.
FSU/Miami battles.
Catholics v Convicts.
Steroid Nebraska superpower.
Preacher McCartney and his outlaw Colorado program.
Miami/U-Dub split championship.
Fun and Gun Spurrier.

am not sure what was worse for the sport, the creation of these big superconferences or the gradual rules changes that changed the intensity of the game. First it was kickoffs, then the targeting, and now it seems to favor pass happy teams.

I think the rule changes are what is killing football in general. What made college fun was the regionalism and the massive variety in offensive and defensive systems across teams and conferences. The NFL has always looked stale by comparison. However, the rules changes have greatly favored the modern spread passing HUNH offenses to the point that 90% of college and NFL teams are running virtually the same style offense. Those rules changes eliminated the variety by empowering one sort of offense above all others.

While I hate the conference expansion of the 2010’s, I loved the old Big 12 and 2000’s ACC. 12 teams is just right from a scheduling standpoint.

The playoff era is here to stay, and unfortunately expansion will happen sooner or later.

People defend the playoff saying FCS and D2 have always done it. Correct, those levels were not tied to bowl systems.

If I want to see playoffs determine champions, I’ll watch those levels or the NFL. FBS may as well change its name again, because bowls are irrelevant at this point. And the powers that be made it that way.
