I just really don’t wanna give him 7 years.

If they give him 7 they can actually stretch the $$$ out and the AAV would be less.

But those last couple of years.....

I'm starting to be ok with losing Freddie as long as we have a backup plan like Olson. Giving huge contracts to aging first basemen never works out well. It would suck to lose the face of the franchise and one hell of a baseball player, but if his top priority is getting max dollars and years, then I can't fault AA for not doing it.

It sucks, but teams that want to win long-term sometimes have to let players walk or trade them. The nats let harper walk then won the WS. The Astros let Cole, Springer and Morton walk and haven't missed a beat. Even the dodgers with their infinite budget let seager and probably Kershaw walk

I don't think hamstringing the payroll with 30-35 mil a year from a aging player is necessarily going to be the easiest way for us to get there.

I've been driving this bus for a long, long time. Let's just say it is not a popular opinion.

How crazy is it that 1 month after winning the WS, we're all ok with losing the best player on the team (sans Ronald).

I don't think anyone is ok with losing Freeman. I think a lot of people are finally starting to come around to how bad a long term contract for a 32 year old player can cripple a franchise.

And yes. Winning a World Series really, really helps .

I'll be emotionally gutted if Freddie walks away, but this is correct. Love him and want him to be a Brave for life, but we also need to make sure the franchise is making the best move for winning in the years to come. Hamstringing the team with a massive deal for an aging player isn't the winning recipe.

Having Freddie get us this title makes it a little bit easier to let him go, mentally.

With Freddie we are a WS contender for at least 2 more seasons. If they can find enough pieces to stay a WS contender okay let him go but if they can’t IMO it’s dumb to waste this window we are in

So you would wanna cripple the club's finances by paying Freddie 200+ MIL?

B/c that's a quick way for the window to close.

I would prefer we try to win another WS the next two seasons versus not crippling the franchise 5 years from now

That's the right answer.

And some times, hard decisions have to be made.

sprry, but if you let Freddie walk, trade for Olson and use some of the money to sign an outfielder, then the team realistically looks stronger for the next couple of years

I am totally fine with that if that’s the plan.

What I am not okay with is not signing freddie and not reallocating that $ towards immediately winning.

With the acuna contract and our current team, every decision we make should be geared towards winning now.

I don't think signing Freddie to a 7-year deal cripples the franchise. He's still got 3-5 years of MVP level baseball in him.

Seems like everyone is trying to change the narrative now that it looks like there's a chance he leaves.

I’m the opposite of everyone else. I’m not worried about the years. I think his swing will let him be successful when he’s older especially with the DH coming. I’m more concerned with a third of the budget going to 2 guys next year.

I want him to stay too and have been on record that I think he stays, however;

If his contract takes up 2/3 of the payroll then you can't do that, it'd cripplee the franchise and would slam the window shut on any WS window

According to Jon Heyman, the Yankees and other teams get the impression that Freeman isn't leaving Atlanta. It's just up to the Braves to find a compromise on the years, he says.  Money isn't the issue, the 6th year is.

It's always been about the years. Not the$$$$. They'll get it done once the lockout is over

For anyone wondering, the Braves player rep is Max Fried. Another thing he has in common w/Glavine.

I've been very consistent on my stance. I love Freddie and want to keep him, but you can't overpay for him based on feels. This is not the kind of franchise that can afford to have "dead money" on the books like the Tigers have with Miggy right now. There is a long list of teams who almost immediately regret giving out long, high dollar contracts. It seems rare to me that these very long deals ever work out for the teams.
