My brother is a tournament patron and gets 2 badges every year. He gives me 2 rounds. Always Sunday and just whatever other day he decides in a particular year. This year he has given me Thursday and Sunday. For those who ask how did he get on the Patron list I can tell you that he got on the last time they took applicants to be on the waiting list. Maybe 2002? They opened it for a very short time and then closed it again. It has never reopened since then. He got the official letter notifying him that his name had been pulled in the drawing for that year in 2008. He was lucky because he was only on the wait list for a few years while others have been on it since the 80s. They don’t do it by seniority. It’s just a random selection to fill that years openings out of the total pool on the waiting list.

I have also entered the lottery every year since 2010 for practice round tickets but this year was the first time that I got them. So I am leaving to drive 3 hours at 5:00am with a very good chance that they might not even open the gates due to weather. Unfortunately, I won’t know until I am there or almost there.

I’m ready!

Four of us are in Kiawah now. We’re playing Ocean Course tomorrow, Osprey on Tuesday and Turtle Point on Wednesday...then leave for Thursday - Sunday in Augusta.

I’m not a huge golf guy, so I didn’t know about the pricing on the food / drinks. That is ridiculously cheap. I realize the tickets are not, but wow.

Just there. Nice for the patrons. Keep the pimento cheese sandwiches.
I'll have three biscuits.

Honestly, I think we’ll have another guy in the weeds win this year. None of the top guys are in form. Molinari wouldn’t surprise me though.

Rory is scorching hot right now.

The guys at Kiawah talked me out of the Ocean Course. We played Osprey and enjoyed it

Went to the OC clubhouse to eat after and saw some LSU guys that had played there. This was the 09 game in Columbia, I think. Maybe '10

Anyway, they said the course kicked their arse. LOL

Ocean Course is stupid difficult. My ball was flying sideways all day, and it wasn’t because of the swing I was putting on the ball.

I wouldn’t recommend playing that course more than once.

I’m preparing mentally for the pain to come. That said, I’m the worst golfer of the group and therefore don’t expect to play all that well today...just plan on enjoying the views and hoping to pull a few good shots out of my arse.

How did you run into two badges though?

Exactly how it happened. The wait list was opened for one year (maybe 1999-2001ish, can't remember exactly) and there was a lottery to get on the list and somehow my dad got drawn. Then, in 2007, we got a letter in the mail saying congratulations, here are your two badges.

Here is something else we found out after going for these past years and getting to know people (including a few mid-level staff people). Back in the 90's, the committee felt that the Masters was getting too corporate with too many badges going to clients instead of golf fans. If you've ever been, you know that Bobby Jones' vision was to keep it affordable so anyone with a ticket could go (hence the cheap concessions and badges - obviously it's a hard ticket but it costs very little). I grew up in Augusta and we were still living there when we got drawn from the lottery. Word is that locals and people from the SE got an extra boost (rumor, but it's all I have).

Talking to people who have been going for decades, they say that it is much less corporate now than it was in the 90's so there could be some truth to it.

Bottom line - we aren't blue bloods (military family), not connected, just straight middle-class southern people who hit the gd jackpot of a lifetime.

You're damn right.

I've know people who have won the lottery for tickets in a given year, but none for badges.

I know you probably already know this, but those badges are only transferable to a spouse upon death of the original owner. I'd imagine that's one of the only things that generates an opening in the waiting list.

Not a huge golf fan, but love this week. I guess it started in 1986 watching with my grandpa as Jack won his final major. Something about spring and the azaleas. Other than a Super Bowl ring as QB, a Masters victory would be my ultimate sports fantasy.

And Tiger's got this. The come back will be completed where the legend truly began. It just feels right.

FWIW, without warming up, Tiger shot a 65 at Augusta last Wednesday. That 65 included a 3-putt on the first hole.

I don’t put much stock in practice rounds. None of that shite matters when the pressure is on.

But I do hope Tiger plays well, and wins. Would be a comeback story for the ages to win a Major after almost 11 years and 4 back surgeries
