Maybe part of Durant coming to Texas entitled his jersey being retired?

It could have been a recruiting ploy.

I know they need to try and create some tradition at there school because they don't have any anywhere else. Especially football.

It's stupid because obviously Texas is just trying to magically create tradition for their basketball program.
Or it could be they're just trying to honor the best player in school history and one of the best freshmen in NCAA History. A guy who took home every last National Player of the Year Award and brought more attention to the program than any other player in program history.

Oh and that team was painfully young and the ones who weren't were very lacking in talent. Without KD, that team probably does not even make the NIT and is an absolute lock for a losing Conference Record.

Wow...you know, Texas never ceases to amaze me. To have the most resources and money in college sports, don't you think that UT's administration has an inferiority complex? Retired Durant's jersey? Locking in Muschamp so early? I don't know...both moves seem small time to me

I agree, they know they are massive underachievers in FB and BB, but try to make it seem like they have an awesome tradition.†

Well we disagree then. I don't want to see one and done players rewarded like that. Having your jersey retired is supposed to be a big deal, and should mean more than just winning some individual awards. It should also be about team contributions, and what you do for the university.

DJ was certainly the next-in-line but he alone would never have gotten us to the dance in 06-07 or even in the Top Half of the Conference.

that is what I am sayin, Durant without Augustine goes nowhere in getting to the tourney, you said Durant singlehandidly led Texas to the ncaa's, I disagreed.

KD might have only been here for one year but it could be argued that his impact (both in his 1 Year at Texas & subsequent 1.5 Years in the NBA) have done more for the program than even TJ and the Final Four Team did in 2003. Texas Basketball has two 5*s (#1 SF & #3 SG) coming in the 2009 Class who are pretty much coming just because KD was here. That's something in itself to go along with all of his individual accolades.

if anybody should have a number retired, it's a person who is the best x in history at that school

*ETA: it would be pretty bad if UT sent one of the top 5 players in the NBA and didn't have some honor for him

Even without DJ, Durant would have gotten us to the tourney that year. We certainly wouldn't have been the #4 Seed we were with DJ and Durant would have had to carry even more of the load but he still would have gotten us there.

Jersey shouldn't be retired unless you get your degree.

I usually think that the only guys that should have their numbers retired are those that truly shaped a program. Durant never shaped Texas' program in a meaningful way. If we're going by the best player should have their number retired, SC needs to get on O.J.'s number and K-State needs to retire Beasley's....neither of these guys really impacted either program in a long term meaningful way just like Durant

The guy was National Player of the Year. frick, if he went there for one year or not, he alone helped continue the tradition of UT hoops...which is just as, if not more, illustrious than our own. They've had a few Final Fours in their time. Their women's team has more hardware than our own. Combine the overall hoops tradition, and UT is one of the best in the Big 12.

They don't have to make their own anything...they are a solid program. They have been in he tourney every year Barnes has been there starting in 1999. They have won I think 3 Big 12 reg. season titles under Barnes. They have been to a Final 4, 3 Elite Eights, and 5 Sweet Sixteens. That is damn impressive. Durant and Ford are the players that really layed the foundation, and Augustine would be next. Why not retire the jersey?
