Sports Illustrated Article

quote:

Per reports Thursday from David Eckert of the Austin American-Statesman, two unnamed Texas football players along with three non-student athlete members of the athletic department committed sports gambling violations from July 11, 2024 through Nov. 4, 2024, making it possible that bets were made on the first eight games of Texas football's season.

These violations were self-reported by Texas to the NCAA.

quote:

According to the Statesman's report, the five unnamed individuals wagered nearly $15,000 on PrizePicks, a fantasy betting apps that's legal in Texas but is still prohibited by the NCAA.

As far as punishment goes, Eckert reports that one of the non-student athletes, who worked in an assistant role, was fired as a result of the wagering. The other two non-student athletes were "issued warnings and administered additional sports betting education," according to Eckert.

For the two unidentifed student athletes on the football team, one player was reportedly required to donate his gamebling winning to a charity of his choice. The other player appeared to have a more serious gambling problem, with the Statesman reporting that he "sought help from his parents" in order to recover from an addiction that apparently caused him to place 67 wagers that cost nearly $10,000. This unnamed player has since left the program, which likely leaves many Texas fans wondering who it could have been when looking at the portal departures this offseason.

Texas getting away with players gambling.

It’s fun to laugh at Texas (and Texas Tech), but this is happening at every school if we’re all being honest with each other

Probably. Gambling has always been a bad vice, but young men are being inundated with advertisement for it these days.

A. Did they bet in games involving their own team?

B. What difference does it make? Texas "law" allows players to be on their own team even if the NCAA doesn't. And I think a little sympathy should be shown for the players here. They didn't want to bet. They just had a debilitating disease that forced them to bet.

Feels like we are missing the big difference here which is betting on their own team

Were they betting on their own games? No? Ok then it's a nothing-burger.

At what point, ever, has “but they’re doing it to” made whatever illegal thing you’ve been caught doing less illegal?

Betting on games that don't involve your team isn't nearly as bad as betting on your team. It's a slippery slope, so it's still not a good thing, but this isn't nearly the same as betting on your own team.

Well this is the problem. Possible is not they did. But if they did, then shouldn't they be going through same treatment as TT QB? Especially since Manning has been QB2 and impacted games in his first year

If Arch Manning's rich arse is dropping money on midweek NBA games IDGAF. Bad habit? Probably, but that's it.

Anybody trying to equate that to Sorsby is an idiot.

Supreme Court really fricked this country when they took the lid off sports wagering

But again, if he's betting $20k on Ewers under in yards because he knows he's playing the entire 2nd half instead of Ewers then he should be blackballed from the sport right?

I don't think you'd get anyone (outside of Texas homers) to argue otherwise.

Sports gambling and NIL will be looked at as the two pillars in the downfall of college sports.
