Looks like the kid might get a shot at the fake Pedro Martinez if Paul loses to him.

it’s also interesting to me how he starts some major threads two weeks early, but not others. I’m in meetings most of the day tomorrow when the draw is released, so probably can’t get to it until Friday. Your honor, your honor.

Federer and Nadal are on the opposite half of the draw which means they'll only be able to play each other if both players make the final. Those two are going to never play against each other at the US Open, are they?

Will the first-round U.S. Open meeting between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova be a good match in terms of play quality? Probably not. Does it promise rich entertainment value anyway? Hell yes.

That Brooksby dude pulled out another win and qualified. The only American too.

ETA: He drew Berdych too. Could be a lot worse.

Shapo beat Rublev. Guys are doing double duty today to get on schedule. Probably not the best way to go into Flushing.

Stevie beat Benny P 6-1 in the first set, then Benny P bagels him in the second. Who would you bet on with your life on the line in the third set?

This is one of the more ridiculous things I have seen. You can say Stevie ran out of gas and that's fair. But, he had a critical non-challenge that may have gotten him back in the match, then just missed closely on two challenges soon after that. Meanwhile, Benny P caught fire. Benny P is incredible when he's on his game.

BennyP has got to have the quickest serve preparation on tour. It's like:

gets ball from ballkid-->turns around-->one bounce-->serve

Like 5 seconds off the serve clock every time.

Gilbert was really trying to emphasize last week how quickly Gasquet delivers. But, you're right about Benny on that.

Herka derka is up a set on Shapo in North Carolina.

Hearing this warms my heart. I think that is -- as in, my semi-regular "pure trash" cfb rankings -- probably my most significant positive contribution to the MSB.

A preseason one isn't happening this year, though (I don't recall whether I've done one preseason in past years, but I shouldn't rule it out, and I'm not gonna look and see).

This CFB season has REALLY snuck up on me. Plus, the rankings start to take on a more meaningful form after a couple weeks.

But don't worry. That franchise isn't going anywhere. I love writing that one.

Two quick hitters on winston-salem final:

1) biggie ups to Gizmo's boy Ben.

2) is there an explanation for that scoreline? That ain't one you see every day in men's pro tennis. Or every week. Or every month. Or every several months. You get the idea.

Bunk mentioned them being behind schedule. I see that was his 2nd match today, and he would have had to play a final tomorrow. Maybe when he dropped the 2nd set he just wanted to get out of town without retiring.

Tommy Paul pain train (his quest for direct acceptance to the Australian open) is at full steam today. A win over Klahn to make the semi's at New Haven.
