I figured I should go ahead and start this since the 2018 season is officially over.

It looks like there will be a mini Davis Cup thing to start the year in 2020, which should be pretty cool.

Is this like the F U to the ITF? Are they trying to minimize Davis Cup as much as possible?
I'm of the opinion that there are already TOO many events. And it doesn't seem as if Laver Cup is going anywhere.

you only started this so that somebody else didn't make the thread when the 2019 season actually starts

I believe Davis Cup is going to be a one week thing at the end of the year. I like the idea, just not the timing. Everyone is tired and injured by that point.
This ATP Cup is probably a good idea to generate interest in the tour right as the new year starts before Oz.
I am meh on Laver Cup. It's quirky and kind of stupid, but the players and fans seem to like it.

He has a weird OCD about calling everything unofficial, too.
I just hope our baw bayoucracka comes back out to play in these threads next year.

Under 30 grand slam winner on the men's side?
I say yes, but just one.

Tennis player-turned-coach and broadcaster Justin Gimelstob was arrested on felony battery charges by Los Angeles police on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Gimelstob is accused of attacking one-time pal Randall Kaplan on Halloween night. Kaplan claims that Gimelstob came up from behind him and struck him 50 times and threatened to kill him. Kaplan said the incident was witnessed by his wife and 2-year-old daughter.
Gimelstob turned himself into authorities on Wednesday and was released on $50,000 bail. He was dressed as a “Top Gun” pilot the night of the alleged incident.
“Unsurprisingly, there is another side to this story and Justin will vigorously defend himself against these claims,” Gimelstob’s lawyer Shawn Holley said. “To that end, Justin has been and will continue to be cooperative with law enforcement.”

Will 2019 be the Federer retirement tour?

I'm thinking he will want to play another Olympics and being with Uniqlo plays into that. So, 2020, unless he really falls off the shelf next year.

I could see that, but there was a huge dip in play the last half of this year. Can't imagine how big of a dip he takes next year. But he keeps proving me wrong, so what do I know.

yes there was. even when he continued to get decent results his level of play was in decline. he is very reliant on his serve to win matches at this point.

Wow.
For what it's worth, I've seen Gimelstob several times at the citi open and he's incredibly high strung. He paces around repeating what he's gonna say over and over before he actually goes live on air (this is when he's out in the field....never seen him in the studio, of course).
And he's almost actively unfriendly. Like, if you see P-mac in the ESPN booth and say hi, he will say hi back, and if you see him around the grounds and say hi he'll even engage you in a convo. If you see gimelstob at the espn tent and say hi he'll angrily look at you and then go back to looking down at his paper, presumably repeating out loud what he's going to say next time he's on air.
So, even though he comes across as cool, calm, and collected on air, he definitely is a living, breathing ball of anxiety.
Not that that means he beat the frick out of this dude....it doesn't. I'm just saying it wouldn't surprise me to hear that he he lost his shite.

I'll co-sign this. He's not going to win another major, but he probably in his head things he will. You gotta remember where his level was between August 2012 and January 2017. It was well below what it was this year. And he still had belief then.
So, I think he goes into this year with the mindset of trying to get another major. I think his results will end up being disappointing, and he'll at that point realize that it's time to do a retirement tour.
