That's roughly $175,000 per second.
The price is up slightly from last year's $5.2 million, and $1 million more than the cost to air a commercial during the 2014 Super Bowl. In just over a decade, the price of the average Super Bowl ad has nearly doubled, as the average 30-second ad cost $2.69 million in 2008, according to Nielsen Media Research.

According to Saints fans, they're looking at bitter disappointment since ratings are going to plunge.

That strategy certainly won't work in Louisiana. In the Bayou state, it's billboards. Billboards everywhere!

Honest question that may be stupid here. For major, worldwide known and loved brands like coke, is it really worth it to spend that much? I'm sure that this is just a drop in the bucket for them, but everyone knows about coca cola it's not like they NEED to advertise. It seems like they could save themselves several million dollars. Is it simply so people can say "hey did you see that coke commercial" ? I guess what I'm ultimately asking is, has there been any data to suggest that major widely known companies like coke or pepsi actually get any kind of return or payoff from spending so much during the SB

They're not going for product recognition or customer acquisition at that point, they're going for retention. Make you crave some coke so you can buy more.

You're right that is a really stupid question. Do you think that Ford, Chevy and Budweiser are not well known companies?

Do you expect companies that no one has ever heard of and don't have a ton of revenues to spend this kind of money on commercials?

I've always thought this as well, but I remember in an MBA class being told that the one year Pepsi finished ahead of Coke in sales was the year Coke didn't do a Super Bowl ad. That blew my mind so much that I still don't believe it's true.

Waste of money for the big boys... if I am a miller lite drinker, I’m not switching to bus just because of a SB commercial....

If Coke/Pepsi/Budweiser/etc. didn't want to run their ads for $5+ million, who else would? Not the small little known companies out there.

But if the big companies didn't pay $5+ million to run an ad then it wouldn't cost $5+ million dollars.

And if it didnt cost $5+ million the smaller little known companies would pay that lessor amount to run an ad during one of the highest viewed events that big companies were not bothering to advertise during.

Then the smaller lessor known companies wouldn't be quite as less known.

It’s also about sending a corporate message to employees. A former conpany gave money to an independent documentarian. The company blasted us with “aren’t we so awesome we gave all this money to this guy for nothing in return” messaging.

Super Bowl commercials have been hot garbage the last 15-20 years and how into them you are is a great barometer of if you are a moron or not.

Gee I love these Doritios so much!

Oh noes a bird just grabbed them.

*Whacky slapstick hijinks while man chases bird for his Doritos*

OMG that was so funny! These commercials are great.
