The only meaningful Upper Deck cards I own is the first year NFL cards from 1991. I've held on to it because Favre's rookie card is in there.
One of those rookie cards and $3.99 and you can get a value meal at Mickey D's.
Protip: If your card was purchased between 1986 and 1994, its best value is as kindling.

what was the mechanism of Upper Decks fall from grace in the business?

Bowman will have this 1/1 card, but by next week there will be another, and another, and another. Inserts and overproduction ruined the business.
Mine are still sitting in my closet, 18 years later. Maybe my boatload of Shaq's will be worth something for my little boy one day.
And Beckett (the magazine), that group got slap rich. Talk about a pay off..... he helped build it up, and then tear it down.
Who was regulating these supposedly "limited" cards of all these companies? apparently no one.

if you have a 1/1 of any kind of card it should be worth something one day.
problem is like the poster above said, with reprints and the likes it really screws with the point of having that 1/1

I would think that most cards through the mid-80's (Fleer, Topps, Donruss) would hold most of their value, unless the steroids issue has affected some of the later cards.
I recently gave away about 7,000 cards, most from those three companies and most from between '83-'88. I could have probably gotten $1 per 1,000 from a dealer had I chosen to sell them.

I used to have a big collection including a Nolan Ryan rookie card that I got for around $100, etc. but I realized that the only people getting paid were the dealers and the Beckett magazine folks. Luckily, my apartment got burglarized and I was able to claim all my cards for the full Beckett value. Nolan Ryan paid off at about $1500 if I remember correctly.
The first year Upper Deck's were incredible compared to the competition. I'm surprised to hear that they are not doing well.

Katrina was the best thing to happen to my baseball card collection.

They lost, or failed to gain, the official license from MLB to produce cards. The did have a license form the Players Assoc and continued to produce cards with the players in MLB uniforms but did not put the name of the team on the cards, only the city. MLB sued and won (suprisingly?) and now they have been order to cease. They also recently failed to gain the NBA and NFL licenses.....BUT they still have exclusive rights to Tiger. When it rains......
