Birmingham Bowl is having a nightmare. 6-6 Georgia Southern is in the game. But Baylor and Rutgers at 5-7 have turned them down. Supposedly Auburn and Florida State have, too.

The playoff is kind of correcting the error that so many people complained about with the “there is too many bowls”

1980 there were only 15 bowls, now there is 40

I’ll miss garbage games in December, but this is what a lot of yall wanted

Im shocked their athletic department was fine with leaving like 8-9 million on the table That is the payoff for their likely bowl

Why play and prove the committee correct?

This shite's hilarious

Everybody worried about Lane, meanwhile the entire college football landscape is fricked......using Lane as an excuse, lol. He's the best thing they have going for them.

So why not make it to where if a team opt out of the bowl they cannot start in the AP top 25 the next year?
Oh no, I’m sure they’ll be so upset about not being ranked in the preseason poll after they’re ranked in the top 15 after week 1

Baylor has opted out too.

They had a losing record and already packed it in. The Birmingham bowl isn’t worth getting a few extra practice days.

That doesn’t mean shite

How about if you opt out, (team or player), you aren’t eligible to play in the postseason the following year

So no CFP or bowl game the following season

No senior or junior who might enter the draft next spring will play in a worthless bowl. So it would not be the top ranked Notre Dame team we’ve watched all season. It will be equivalent to fielding a Notre Dame spring practice team.

Probably going to see more of this with schools having to pay players directly.

Smaller bowl games are often money losers for the teams playing in them. The bowl payout goes to the conference to split between their members. The schools incur a lot more travel costs for bowls because they have to be in town for multiple days instead of traveling in on Friday and heading home right after a normal road game. If the school can’t sell out their ticket allottment, they may have to eat that cost for the unsold tickets.

ETA: Teams have the benefit of extra practices if you were playing in a bowl game. But now that has less value with all the annual roster turnover with the transfer portal.

Im sure those other kids would love to play and get a chance to show their stuff. Fans should support that.

Or, maybe a corrupt selection committee shouldn't promote an inferior three loss SEC team into the playoffs over a more deserving independent.

In the old days, sure, you would be 100% right. Those days are over. Never to return.

Does ESPN get the blame for this? Allowing any sponsor who wants to slap their name on a bowl have one and fill it with shitty teams after the fact.
