no. a team would have still paid him big money this year

You just argued the post before that teams aren't paying big money for running backs, but in your next post you're saying they'd give big money for an injured running back?

there is no such thing as "long term stability" as a RB so getting $27M guaranteed over 2 years is way +EV for a RB

Adding up the 2 years is really being disingenuous since it wasn't entirely guaranteed at the start of year 1.

Before last season, the tag on Bell was absolutely not the best contract for him. Right now at this very moment, the tag on him for this coming is not the best contract for him.

Things have worked out over this 2 year span because he was not injured, but the whole point of wanting a long term deal with likely double the guaranteed money than he's made in any 1 of these 2 years is to mitigate that risk.

Players should demand reform on this and many other points come the end of the current CBA.

The union has already signaled the franchise tag is something they want reformed in 2021 when the current CBA expires. IMO, that is one reason the NFLPA is so weak. They always seem to spend most of their negotiating collateral on a single issue, and give the owners years to develop a work around because they announce their strategy years in advance.

In this case, 99% of players will never even be threatened with the franchise tag, but they’ll concede on other issues in order to secure a “win” on this one.

I seriously doubt he'd be getting more guaranteed money.

They're making the same mistake the redskins made two years ago. If they would have just paid him the first time, they would have probably come out ahead.
Of course that all changes the second he gets injury.

He just signed a 1 year deal at $14.54. If he were a free agent, there is a 100% chance he'd get more guaranteed than that.

would let him walk for what he wants. rbs are a dime a dozen, and have the shortest shelf life

context

he'd still get big money * for a RB

that's not big money *objectively

and he's a RB so that argument isn't very persuasive, especially since he's wanting mega money for a RB that he likely won't get, regardless. this is actually the closest he will get to the deal he's looking for

Sounds like he should have been a bit more flexible with his yearly salary demands if he truly wanted the security of a long term deal, no?

There's also a 100% chance Pittsburgh was offering more than $14.54 guaranteed in a long(er) term deal.

exactly

he's getting more per year this way than what he's demanding, and way more per year than what he's likely going to get on the open market

Only because he didn't get hurt the 1st year he was tagged...which is the entire point being those 2 years weren't both guaranteed at the start of year 1 obviously.
Bro.

He could have negotiated his way into yearly security.

He chose not to. Or, he decided that gambling on himself year to year was in his best interest when compared to taking whatever the Steelers were offering him.

He probably thinks, "dangit, I should have taken that deal for more years."

If I were him, I would not play at the first sign if injury instead of playing through it. Sit and make my money. Become free agent and sign a long term deal.

Is that what he’s asking for in a long term deal? That’s ridiculous if so.

You can't possibly argue that he wouldn't get a good bit more guaranteed money if he were a free agent.

Stop, that's just being silly at this point.

Or the Steelers didn't give him what he felt he was worth.
