well i believe if you do it multiple times in a row, it goes up prohibitively

and he's making a shite ton every year he's tagged

he's not getting $15M/year on the free market

the issue is he plays a position with long-term concerns. He wants a contract with guaranteed money, not a franchise tag for a lot of money for one season, and I completely understand that. I also don't believe he'll walk away and retire

If he blew out his knee, he wouldn't get that second tag.

well people are upset about the 2nd tag, which he did receive (and gave him like a 25% bump over his already top-paid RB salary)

Players want long term stability because shite happens and these one year deals give them absolutely no long term protection

Freeman just signed a 4-year deal. i doubt Bell will get anything longer than that (and he's already gotten PAID for "two years" of that hypothetical 4-year deal).

Leonard Fournette is the only RB with more guaranteed money than that.

What if he had torn his knee up this past year? He'd be SOL, right?

no. a team would have still paid him big money this year

and he didn't. people are complaining about the 2nd Franchise Tag, so that hypothetical is meaningless given the criticisms

The point is, that if he would have signed a long term deal last off season, he probably wouldn't have received 27 mil guaranteed over the full contract. So, he's already ahead. If he stays healthy again this season he can either play under the tag again next season, or sign a longer deal then. If he doesn't stay healthy, he got 27 mil over 2 years which is probably about what he would have received in guarantees if he signed a 4 year deal last off season.

He'd be crazy to retire. Just play it out year to year and make your $15-$16 million a year. It's a crap shoot because if you have a career ending injury there goes your guaranteed money, but if you don't get injured, and play 5-6 more years, ole baw gonna come out WAY ahead

I think the guy still should have a right to go out and get a contract from someone else if the team he's on doesn't want to give to him.

I can understand the use of the tag for one year but teams abuse it by using it as a way to avoid making a commitment to a player.

I'm not an expert on this, but theoretically doesn't this mean a team can just franchise tag a RB each year, pay them a lot for a single year, and give them no future contract?

It gets more expensive for the team to franchise the same guy over and over. I believe that the value of the franchise tag is the average annual salary of the top 5 highest paid players at that position or 120% of the tagged player's previous year's salary, whichever is higher. So if the team tags the same player multiple times, it costs 20% more each year.

exactly

and he can still sign another "big" deal in a year if some team is dumb enough to tie big money into a FA RB

there is no such thing as "long term stability" as a RB so getting $27M guaranteed over 2 years is way +EV for a RB

I agree with you, but that's not how this works

I don't think the franchise tag should be allowed on a player in consecutive years. NFLPA should fight for change next negotiation.

I'm pretty sure that used to be how it worked, and it was changed.

I'm not talking about this one specific instance. I think the franchise tag is awful for the players and I can't believe the NFL union is so weak to let this shite continue

hey need to make the tag more cap-prohibitive. Teams shouldn't be able to tie up someone over and over like this. You don't want to give him a contract, let him go and teams will trip over themselves to give him what he wants

NFLPA’s fault. Weakest of all of the Big 4 sports unions. Players should demand reform on this and many other points come the end of the current CBA.

Isn't his the "exclusive" type where he can't even negotiate with other teams?

I think he’s also one failed drug test from a season long suspension.

And I guess the Steelers even went up from their 13.3 per year offer they presented last year.

He wants to be paid based on his overall production, not as a pure rb.

Top 10 in receptions
Top in rushing attempts
Top in total touches

The tread on those tires are adding up, fast.

Keep him on the tag
Draft guice or anyone of those other rbs
Let him walk in FA.

Only because he didn't get hurt the 1st year he was tagged...which is the entire point being those 2 years weren't both guaranteed at the start of year 1 obviously.
