And Jim Caldwell really isn't an idiot and arguably the worst coach in the history of the NFL. Every idiotic decision he made in that game was a calculated move to ensure a Saints victory.

To be fair, Caldwell is better than guys like Ray Handley and Rich Kotite.

USSR beating the USA in the olympics
The real question is why those olympics officials were so determined to give USSR all those chances.

The ref's didn't fail, they was just no way in the world Rich Rod was going to win that game. The deal to Michigan was ready to sign, a cheerleader was about to come out and say he forced her to get an abortion, and everything was going to get real ugly. LSU fans the world over should thank RRod's dick for that 07' BCS Championship.
But Miles was slated to go to Michigan until earlier that day.

Lance Armstrong really took PEDs. Oh wait...

Miles was totally going to Michigan until Herbstriet blew the story.
Miles knew he still a good shot at the NC so he had to deny and deny hard because he didn't won't to risk the present for the possiblities of the future.

According to this thread, there is really no reason to watch sports at all, since everything is just a scripted WWF display.

It's still real to me damnit!

Because FIBA officials kept coming down from the stands to demand they replay the final play again and again. I don't really blame the ref, as his BOSS told him directly to run the play again. What would you do? And it was a conspiracy to get someone to win other than the US.
The Eric Gregg thing isn't a conspiracy, he was just a lousy ump who liked calling strikes.
The Cal thing is ridiculous because even if he was distraught over Costner sleeping with his wife, it's absurd to think they couldn't have just put him in to pinch hit to keep the streak alive. That story is just all kinds of crazy and doesn't pass the sniff test. Cal was obsessed with the Streak. He could've shown up, played the 1st inning, and left.

As far as cheating goes, LSU had at least one player I know of on their team in the 60's that was taking money from local mobsters and lost a couple of iffy games during that stretch.

MLB rules say you have to play at least 5 innings for it to count as a game played. If it's less it only counts as an appearance.

the Falcons didn't try the whole game.
More likely they were caught up in the moment and didn't have that same burning desire to beat down their opponents.
It'd be hard to box/wrestle with a guy whose mom just died (etc etc)

The Saints offered him like 5 million a year, but he signs with the 49ers for like $400,000?
Hence, Tom Benson's "Mickey Mouse Organization" comments.
He wanted to win a title. Don't be so butthurt.

"The Americans have to learn how to lose, even when they think they are right."
That was from the FIBA official (Renato William Jones) who Baloo is talking about. It really seems as simple as FIBA wanting to knock us down a peg and teach us a lesson I guess.

Yes they and the BE probably were, but when you run the same 3 plays on offense all night, it's not showing a lot of effort. Miles may have been according to Herbstriet, but obviously that wasn't the case. Word around the campfire is that RR had WVU permission to look around(they were trying to keep the cheerleader/abortion scandal quiet), he obviously found it because he went straight from the game to an airplane(owned by a big WVU donor) to Michigan.

Basketball is an american game that isn't that popular in other countries, particularly in 1972. FIBA needed someone other than the Americans to win to help spread the sport and keep it in the Olympics. Hoops is much more popular now, though its popularity internationally is way overstated by American basketball fans. I lived in England and didn't meet one devoted basketball fan in Europe. But they all liked Jordan, the same way we like Messi.
The 1972 Soviet gold medal allowed basketball to gain a real foothold in eastern Europe, particularly. They needed to think they could win. FIBA was very open about the fact they wanted someone else to win, and American dominance was bad for the sport.

The person making the decision is the on field referee in the NFL, hence going under the hood.
Not during the replacement ref period, the NFL actually had the booth officials making the calls.
