I have a Cracked ICE RPA Burrow numbered 10/23. Before his injury they were selling for $1K plus... Worth about $600 now.

Topps is just as bad. More and more of the same old boom or bust products. Way too many redemptions that never get fulfilled. Way too many parallels. Ugly designed base sets. Horrible customer service.

The whole concept is dumb. Give me $1,000 and I could probably get you a jersey signed by whomever.
In fact you can buy it straight from the Bengals for Burrow for $469.00 right now.
The values with exception of vintage cards are vastly over inflated.

Thought about getting back into Basketball Card collecting.
Don’t do it. People will disagree but it’s a hobby. You’re not going to make money except in rare exceptions. If you’re going to collect, it needs to be Vintage.

Too much focus is on making money on it these days. Collecting whatever team or players you want is about fun. With that in mind, Pio shouldn’t be going out and buying $4500 boxes of hobby prizm in hopes of getting all the parallels for Corliss Williamson cause that’s retarded.
I collect rookie autos of Bama football players, and for that I buy singles off Ebay. I don’t care about flipping a Jalston Fowler rookie ticket auto in the future, I enjoy finding and chasing those guys knowing it’s just a money sink. But it’s fun anyways.
I have bought into breaks a few times and gotten extremely lucky with big cards I don’t collect which I sell.
Buying hobby boxes for yourself at these prices is stupid and you’ll waste your money 99% of the time. Buy singles and buy into PYT breaks for a fraction of the cost.

PYT breaks lower your roi even more. They are also a big part of the price inflation. Breaks best done with friends.
Not to mention you can whiff completely on a break.

It depends on who your team is I guess, but I’d much rather drop $50 on a multiple Optic box break with the Falcons and whiff chasing Julio and Calvin Ridley parallels than buy the whole box for 1K and get Derrick Brown as my auto
But I don’t do that often.

Just saw the jumbo Hobby Box for Topps Series 1 baseball was $299, that is absofrickinlutely absurd. Price has gone up over 100% in 2 years. Hobby box goes for $150 now. Good grief.
Thanks, but no thanks.

In 2012- 2013, I’d go to Jason’s Cards off Sherwood and drop $500-$700 dollars on hobby boxes at once.
I quickly noticed it was a money sink. Think the best card I ever scored was like a 1/3 Bill Russell.
Still say the only thing I enjoyed out that whole run was the feeling of breaking packs. It was exciting and nostalgic.

It’s absolutely the worst time to get in to the hobby if you genuinely enjoy collecting. A ton of new people have entered treating the hobby like the stock market. There’s always been speculators but right now it’s rampant.
My 2 cents, if anyone does want to jump in, narrow your focus and go hard. Too many folks try to collect too many things. They end up having a lot of “good” stuff but nothing great. Best collections I’ve ever seen involved a single player and sometimes not even a superstar.

I haven’t been into card collecting since the early 90s....
Safe to assume upper deck, fleer, donruss and Beckett don’t exist anymore?

I have just about every Mark Teixeira card produced (including multiple parallels) from his Rookie year through the time the was traded to the Yankees.
Too bad nobody gives a crap about Mark Teixeira

Relics corrupted the hobby, just like it did the Catholic Church in the 1500s. It hasn’t been the same since.
Hot take.

To me this is interesting though. The collection is greater than the player.

That's how I've always felt. I think if someone saw a good portion of the cards in my collection or why I have two pages worth of Acie Law or Bracey Wright or Marcus Smart cards, they'd think I was crazy.
I think the odder the collection, the more personal it is, and when you do wind up passing it down to your kids, etc., it provides a number of stories as to why

Unfortunately, my collection isn’t narrow. But I don’t spend big bucks to get it. I dropped $8 on a lot of 1000 common cards today. It was all baseball, ranging from ‘82 to ‘99. If I find 10 cards I can get signed in person or through the mail, it’s worth it to me. Buying a single on eBay will be about a dollar at the cheapest.
I focus mostly on autographs. I collect LSU, Spurs, Indians, and Rockies mostly, but I won’t not get an easy autograph of someone just because they aren’t on my team.
I typically don’t waste money on breaks. I have a few thousand autos in my collection. I dropped a decent chunk of change on this latest LSU draft class. Mostly I do in person at low level baseball games and things like that. I despise the guy asking a prospect for 20 signatures. That’s chicken shite, and selling them online that night is BS too. It’s a good, healthy hobby to get a kid involved in...or to sober yourself up (true story).
The market right now sucks. It’s been messed up by people thinking they’ll make a retirement out of box breaks. It’s been brutal just finding retail boxes or packs at your local Wal Mart or Target.

I built up quite a collection of Bregman rookies and Bowman autos. It's absolutely absurd to try to break your own boxes now becuase the return is abysmal. I know a few sellers out there that sell slots for each team in the case, makes the value of return higher if you can get in on that particular team youre collecting - good luck if thats dodgers/yanks/cubs/redsox

I’m a big collector, though I’ve reached the point that cards are impossible to find. I have several YouTube videos on my collection if anyone would like to check them out.
