Those don't qualify. Unless you were drafted in the first round you didn't come out of nowhere.

Jerry Rice was drafted in the first round. So was Walter Payton

In 1975 Jackson State had two picks in the top 6, and Grambling added another I the top 10 for the HBCU

Rodgers always had a an arm, but he was a skinny 160 lb kid out of HS. Packed on the weight as he matured and became a freak.

Arian Foster was one of the top RB's in the country coming out of high school.

ETA: also came from a big-time college program

Pretty good list, esp. Bart Scott (for being a smaller school guy). Wasn't Ninkovich drafted by the Saints, but didn't fit scheme-wise? He's obviously solid in NE.

Makes you wonder how all of these major colleges overlook these guys. It's not like they couldn't run fast in HS like they can now. They could always run and had the requisite athleticism.

Was it all based on size?

Mike Evans was a three star with no good football offers outside of A&M. He didn't even have a picture on Rivals. He played one year of high school football. Sherman spotted him, redshirted him to give him time to learn, and the rest is history.

Sherman might've been a bad HC, but did find some really good talent. He recruited Manziel, but obviously he redshirted his final yr (Tannehil was the starter).

eta: Darqueze Dennard is a similar example. Hardly recruited in GA (he was a WR in HS), played all 4 years, and ended up as a 1st rounder.

Sammie Coates will be one soon. Was a 2-3* out of high school and was committed to Southern Mississippi (his only other offer) before he blew Auburn away at a camp. Legit 4.3 guy with a vertical of over 44 inches. Around 6'2 and 215 pounds. Physical specimen.

I think Jon Kitna had a story like this. Dennis Erickson went to watch a nephew or some other guy he was scouting and was like "hey, that dude is pretty good."

Kurt Warner and James Harrison are the biggest two that come to mind.

Mike Evans was a two-star from a small high school with only one year of football experience when he signed with A&M. Two years later he was the best receiver in CFB and a first round pick.
