Memory was right for once, it was two. Kebrion Morgan in 2010 and Jaleel Gipson in 2013. Morgan had an enlarged heart that was never diagnosed and passed in film study after practice. Gipson suffered a neck injury during spring practice and ended up passing a couple days later after being declared brain dead. I am not in anyway saying that Spat or his staff are in anyway responsible, but I do not know of many coaches that could survive two players passing during practices in a three year stretch.

Why would a state champion football coach step down to be a vice principal at a middle school?
It’s actually a VERY easy decision
More money, better retirement, less work
Coaches make little money and work hours upon hours more than administrators

Guy I know, who grew up in Farmerville wrote this yesterday, seems like the town really liked this guy.
I took a day to process this move and what it means to not only our community but our family. It’s hard to put into words what I’ve seen him handle in life. He lost his dad as a young boy, became a dad at a young age (I can still see Chase’s little fat self on the couch while me and a few friends helped Joe and Casy move into that little place in Ruston while Joe was at Tech). He graduated college with a full on family, went over seas to serve our country (lost one of his best friends while there and didn’t get to come home for the funeral), and all kinds of other stuff.
He’s a good coach but it’s not because he’s the best football mind. It’s because he knows struggle and hardship. He knows what some of these young people are dealing with at home. When you can relate, you can motivate. And he can sho nuff motivate.
I think in the 20 years he’s been at Farmerville/Union Parish, I bet I’ve only seen him about 5 times at Thanksgiving. Why? Bc he locks in on the playoff game the next day and doesn’t want to get distracted. He gives up so much bc he knows what this time means to those young men.
You have no idea how hard it is to read some of yalls comments about him when you don’t know one single thing about him or what he’s been through. But we sit here in quiet. Not bc we don’t want to clap back. But we know it reflects on him and our family.
A lot of people don’t like his aggressive language and tough demeanor. That’s his job. Literally. These coaches livelihood’s are on the line every single game of every single year and it’s all in the hands of teenagers. How would you like to hang your career on how good a group of 17 years olds can do their job? Would you yell? Fuss at them? Most of yall wouldn’t last a season.
He’s done 20 of ‘em.
I’ll end with this. I’ve worked with several of his former players and every time I mention he’s my family, they smile big and say “That’s my coach”. Every. Single. Time.
He’s their coach.
He’s my family.
And we all are very proud of what he’s accomplished and what he’s about to do for Drew Central. See less

Drew central is a perennial bottom dweller. Odd decision to be sure. Seems to be a major step down and I doubt it was his choice if he’s having to settle for Drew central
Gonna say you must not know much about Farmerville High before he took over. They won a single championship on 01. Before and after that they were the pits... Until Spat took over.

Ole Greg can write good..
Every word he said is true. I was there with him growing up in Farmerville. He never once complained about his situation and if he call you a friend, you never had to worry about your 6.
He has demons, just like we all do. He's found a way to turn that into others success. Whether you like him or hate him, you have to respect that.

IDK how old he is or how long he has in the system, but if he's eligible for Louisiana retirement he can go to Arkansas, work there while drawing his Louisiana pension and approximately double his take home pay. Then if he works long enough in Arkansas, he can retire with two pensions. A couple of my HS teachers put their 20 years in the Louisiana system then went to Texas.

I’ve worked in public education in both Arkansas and Louisiana. Louisiana paid better even at the shittiest of schools. Hell I figured that was why the pay was so good otherwise nobody would work there
