do you like being called emo?
It's pretty clear we don't have anythign better to do, so that's the point of arguing this thread.

That's why you guys can't beat New Zealand.

Actually the problem is American soccer fans. I like soccer ok. I respect soccer.
But American soccer fans who are trying so desperately to emulate their European counterparts is what provides the douchey perception. Plenty are normal, but more than a few are the same kids who refused to adopt the hometown team because they wanted to be different, or refused to like American sports at all.
In time America will put its own spin on soccer support, but for now we're doing a lot of copying, and those who don't copy are told they simply "don't get it."

I just see the need for non-soccer fans to comment about how much they hate soccer during every USA game that is on.
Would be like me commenting about NASCAR during every race.
If you don't like it fine, no need to trash the sport every single game.

Who are they supposed to copy then? The atmosphere at MLS games has done a total 180 to what it used to be like 10 years ago.
Ive never met an american soccer fan who doesn't like american sports.

We already have for the national team. But MLS is different b/c lots of teams have fans from latin america who bring that feel to the game. Then you have lets say Portland who has a very German feel to it b/c thats who they chose to be like. Nothing douchey about that.

They feel threatened by the growth soccer has experienced in this country over the last 8-12 years. They are lashing out because deep down they know they are the ones with the problem. Maybe some of them will stop being so closed minded, I doubt it but one can hope.

Do baseball fans find soccer boring?
Posted on 6/18/14 at 9:32 am to CaptainBrannigan
This is a fricking retarded premise.
I have no problem with soccer or its fans. However, I do have a problem when soccer fans treat soccer as if it's "sports vegetables." As in, "it's good for you to like soccer" or as if liking soccer makes you intellectually superior and others just don't understand.

The soccer board does this too

Yeah, you either like it or you don't. People like different things. I have a friend who will watch the entire Tour de France. Don't get me wrong, I'll check it out, but I won't DVR it and watch the damn thing.

Sure, I agree with that. Like I said, I like soccer, in large part.

This I agree with. The people who trash soccer during a game thread have a problem.

So, if you don't like soccer it makes you closed minded? I don't particularly like soccer. It just isn't my thing. I find it too boring. Some people may feel the same about baseball, which I like.

I don't really have a problem with the copying, as long as the people doing the copying don't have a problem with me noticing what they're doing.
Point is, if you go over to the soccer board and make that comment, you'll be shouted down by a bunch of soccer loyalists, many who are relatively new to the sport. I think it is fine, I just don't think we need to pretend like we aren't trying to "accelerate" the fandom of the US by imitation and forcing the issue.
Very few US soccer fans grew up in the game hating Mexico and chanting IBTWWW (none to the latter). That's fine, but don't pretend like you did when less devout fans want to participate in support.
As for the American sports thing, I know quite a few who were never much for US sports, but have since become very loyal soccer fans. I like them, so I'm not going to call them douches or anything, but I certainly think being the fan of a unique sport you have to go to a bar to watch live was part of the appeal.

I understand not everyone likes soccer. However, many people who don't like it ARE ignorant of the game. Tons of people actually think most games end 0-0 for example. That's where the ignorant part comes in.
