I remember a big deal made about a horse called Silver Charm many years ago. I guess same thing happened today.

I did when i first herd him but now that i think about it i don't at all.
if we changed things, it would cheapen the TC. if we had a TC every 4 years it would not be what it is now and that really is the only thing keeping racing somewhat in the back of the stage as it is. IF we change it up "so we can have more TC winners" it's arse backwards logic. having more TC winners is not going to revive the sport. having more horses GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN THE TRIPLE CROWN is what is going to save the sport
there is no mandate saying we have to have TC winners. If you can't bred / train / race a horse that is good enough to win the TC than tough cookies.
yeah these horses were fresh but they aren't blazing fast. the winner won the race in 2:28 and 3. that's not all that fast. if you had a horse that could run 12F in a legit grade 1 time you'd be sipping wine right now.
i don't want the sport to be cheapened. even if it means i have to go another 50 years to see a TC winner .

This was the same dude who bashed Churchill Downs.
To be fair, some of his criticism of Churchill Downs has been justified. They've been some Grade A tools to some other horsemen and I was glad he called them out.
But his rant today, while debatable, comes off as extremely asshurt when your horse just lost the Triple Crown. I'm sure he'd feel differently had Chrome won.

I'm with you.
We would have missed out on some great moments.
Rachel's Preakness to name one.
Hell, ap indy scratched the derby the morning of the race. He wouldn't have been allowed.
Speech was super tacky and really turned me off to coburn

Dude has a point but its hard to feel sorry for a guy who uses an oportunity like that to rail against a sport that just put several million dollars in his pocket in the for of winnings and future stud fees and/or sale of the horse.
Dude is a pussy.

OR Rags to Riches Belmont would not have been alowed
yeah he's full of shite.

It is supposed to be very difficult. In the not so distant past, the Belmont was actually considered more important by horse people, because it was a true measure of a horse's ability to carry his speed over a distance. Breeders were often more inclined to breed to a Belmont winner. Part of our problem has been the predominance of Northern Dancer and Raise a Native blood in the gene pool. These were great sires who produced a lot of good horses, but they also produced a lot of unsound horses. The fact that we allow horses to race on medication should tell you something. For several years, horses could run on Lasix and Bute. Lasix is the only thing allowed now. Changes are being made to reintroduce sounder tougher horses. We do not need to change the format of the Triple Crown. Horses like Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, etc. ran the series under the current format against all comers; they were great horses. California Chrome is not a great horse.

It's the triple crown: three different races.
If he wanted a limited field based on qualifying points he should have bought a race car, instead.

Three races against the best competition, supposedly, in the triple crown span is a true challenge, as we saw today. Their have been a few rare 10 year olds that continued to race, my favorite of all time , John Henry, The Tinman & Evening Attire. The horses that win a major rarely continue to race past 3 in the modern era.
From the Useless, Nice to Know John Henry file:
39 wins & $6.5mil in winnings before the big pay days, twice Horse of the Year. Ran at the Fairgrounds numerous times.
Passed in 2007 @ 32. Buried @ Arlington, bronze statue marks the spot with the following inscription:
"If tears could build a stairway, and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to Heaven, and bring you home again."

Not a single horse that finished ahead of CC ran all three races.

He was an a-hole, though
Mean son of a bitch but he could run.

Actually, let me clarify what I mean by "tarnishing the story". This story wasn''t really about the horse. The feel good story was about the owners, salt of the Earth type people compared to the stereotypical wealthy horse owner(s).
The made for TV/movie story is about "normal" hard working people who purchased a horse for next to nothing and that horse nearly won the triple crown.
His rant and jackassery (pun intended) ruined the feel good story. Everyone, rich or salt of the earth, now has the impression that the owners are poor sports, terrible losers, and ironically....entitled.
Horse racing entitlement versus homegrown luck was and has been the storyline leading up to this race. These people and their horse weren't supposed to be a threat to the establishment. It was a classic rich versus "poor" David versus Goliath storyline that the average person could connect to. Ambition versus entitlement.
With his rant, he effectively showed the world that he became what he openly criticized...entitled. He became the establishment.

i know nothing about horse racing, so could some of you guys elaborate on what you mean by modern breeding methods won't allow us to see another triple crown winner?
i assume it means that most of the horses are physically on par with one another these days, while in the past there were a few that were head and shoulders more gifted than the rest?

Bred for short flashes of speed, mature super early so lots of heft on young developing bones (mostly for the sales ring), and much more fragile than they used to be.
Horses used to run every week.

Owner got emotional. I sympathize as he doesn't seem to have been in this for money. The fields in these races were significantly larger than those of the 70s triple crown winners. If CC isn't a great horse, they deserve a medal for courage.

I think he's a great horse. Just look at what he's done this year.
Plus, he joins my favorite horse of all time with a loss on that Belmont (Sunday silence).
Maybe he'll take the breeders cup too!
