Between this, Facebook, and texts I've gotten myself all worked up

Hopefully ill be able to sleep.

I will say, if I had a late blooming 3 year old that was good enough, I would certainly enter it (because a filly won after not running in the derby in 07), and if there was a triple crown on the line I wouldn't think twice. Gotta get that black type on a broodmare and gotta get those graded wins for the stallion ads. It's just how it is. Things lose their luster when they aren't really won. Belmont is called the test of a champion for a reason. Gotta face the best and not dodge anyone.

This might seem like a stupid question but I am going to ask it anyway. They make a big deal out of the belmont being a mile and a half and I get that. But they also constantly talk about the races being so close together. Does the races put so much stress on a horse that they can't recover in the time frame?

im guessing the travel has to effect them as well. they aren't like humans that can just hop on a plane for a quick 2 hour flight between states.

I know, I'm mad.

Ponchy,I'm ok with the timeframe changing because it used to all the time. The races have even been closer together.

The need for more time between races is because of breeding practices. Horses don't hold up like they used to. They used to race once a week.

I will also say, to all those mad about horses skipping the Preakness, that a month or so off between races is normal now. They are just keeping the horses on their schedules.

See I never even thought about travel issues. I would imagine that plays a part now that I think about it.

Why do horses not hold like they used to? I would think that with more knowledge and technology in training they would be stronger and more durable now. I also hear that horses used to be trained for stamina but are now bred and trained for speed and thats one reason they don't hold up, is that true?

Aspercel, school me on Cigar. from my understanding, he is the best horse of the last few decades, why didn't he run in any of the triple crown races?

I recall this being an issue when reading 'Seabiscuit'.

Speed, speed, speed.

One good example is unbridled's song. He was fast, but not the soundest horse on the black.

Despite that people bred to him in droves. I swear their bones are made of glass. He had so many high profile breakdowns from his babies. Remember eight bells? Shattered both front ankles on the derby in 08. But, his babies were fast and sold for big bucks, so they continue to breed.

Breeders care more about breeding to mature early and sell than actually breeding to race (for the most part).

Anything brilliantly fast is either retired upon injury to stud or retired so early you have no clue how well they hold up, to stud.

Breeding horses with issues just because they are fast has hurt us..

He was better as he got older. A late bloomer.

That has to be a huge flaw in the system. Do you see this cycle ever being broken and fixed?

Nope

Now I'm drunk and getting on my breeding soapbox. Hubby and I fight about this often.

Give me some throwback looking grass horses. Lots of bone and substance to them.

Figured that would be your answer.

Cause everyone wants speed and speed and the quest for it means $$$$$$$

At the end of day thats all that matters to most of them I would imagine.

I love that he goes on about how it's not fair to the horse and how it's running for the people. LOL. I'm sure the horse really loves the crowd and understands whether it has just won a triple crown or not.

PS: No, he doesn't have a point. This isn't some new thing.
