It’s very close. Nutting doesn’t care even the slightest bit about winning while Monfort is just a moron who has no idea how to do it. I’m not sure which is worse to be honest

It’s a damn shame.
And the pirates continue to say “we want to build around him”.
Then do it. Spend money! Get free agents!
Because I guarantee he’s gone when his contract is up, because it would take far too long to build via the draft.

He'll be a Dodger or Yankee in the next few years.

Probably 2030 unless they trade him.

Could we potentialy see a multi year hold out from young mr skenes? Maybe only throw private bullpens for mlb scouts until his contract runs up! Wouldnt be the worst decision he could make

Aside from committing a serious felony and turning himself in it might be

At the deadline, Andrew Heaney, Pham, and IKF will be traded for prospects. The Pirates will try to move Hayes, Reynolds, and Bednar.
I wouldn't be surprised if they also moved Keller for a haul.
Next year's rotation will be Skenes, Chandler, Jones, Falter, and probably a vet
The lineup is going to be an issue unless ownership decides to spend. If they don't move Hayes and Reynolds, then you have several positions set
C- Bart/Davis
1B- Horowitz/Triolo
2B- Gonzales
SS- ?????
3B- Hayes
OF- Cruz
OF- Reynolds
OF- Canario
In next year's Free Agency, maybe they will take a flier on Jordan Montgomery's bounce-back and Trevor Story's ability to play SS. There are also Kim, Torres, Eflin, and Santana, who could help with contracts of around 10-15 million.
However, they will probably stand pat and hope some of those young guys they have develop while wasting Skenes most dominant seasons.

This is the second time in 4 starts that he's gone 8 and given up one run, yet still took the L.
He's given up 4 runs in the last 5 starts, never giving up more than 1 run in any of the outings. His record... 1-2.

Story isn’t a free agent until 2028. The Pirates are not signing or even competing for guys like Gleyber Torres, who is going to get much more than 10-15 million

Pirates lost 3-0 with Skenes giving up a single earned run over 8 innings, striking out 8, and walking just a single batter.
And the Astros pitcher did 6 innings of 2 hit ball with 7 ks and 0 runs earned.
He outplayed Skenes last night. It happens.
I don't think this thread was just based on last night, but it isn't a good time to bring it up

No one wants the pirates garbage
Their offense is putrid, they have zero to build around, and brought back mccutcheon for christs sake.
U bring him back to solidify a set roster, not to be one of your main guys.

I have a feeling Story won't be in Boston after this season. Because of his performance, I don't even think he makes it through this season. If that happens, it would be a vet minimum since the Red Sox would pay his full salary. Torres is certainly playing himself out of that ranch. I was using him as an idea of the type of player they may find in Free Agency next year.

Or when Felix Hernandez won the Cy Young with a 2.27 and barely squeaked out a winning record at 13-12. I have no idea how he put up with the Mariners for that long.
Felix lost so many 1-0 games in Seattle. He won his perfect game 1-0. That's about what it's gonna take for Skenes in Pittsburgh.

They need Cruz to hit a level he hasn’t really approached yet (5-7 WAR type player) and Konnor Griffin to become the type of star that forces his way up at age 20-21. Even then it’s not likely they will have the type of position player core that can contend before Skenes approaches FA
A franchise like Pittsburgh is never building a plausible position player core through FA
They just drafted and developed terribly on the position player side. I’m guessing they will have a new front office after the year but it’s not going to make much of a difference in the short term

If you have been drafting top 10 for decades, you better have a better roster than this garbage.

I just don't understand why the Pirates don't seemingly even try to be competitive and haven't since the 90s.
They're in a town that loves and supports sports. They have one of the best venues in baseball. Their football team may have gone a bit without doing a lot in the playoffs but they're at least making the playoffs most years. Until recently, their hockey team made the playoffs every year. But the Pirates have only made an actual playoff series once since 1992. That should never happen.
