We are talking about pitches.
If a catcher happens to see a steal sign, and calls a pitch out, is that cheating?
If a DB in the nfl hears and recognizes an audible from Brady, and jumps the route, should he be punished?

Well if we’re not allowed to be stealing signs, then no.

It's the difference between the middle linebacker picking up on call signs from the QB vs an assistant coach tapping into the QB/Coach's headset and listening into the play call

Sign stealing is a part of baseball. It is why there are complicated signs.

Using technology to do it is a no-no.

Stealing signs is not illegal.

What the Astros did is use a camera in centerfield to view the catcher’s signs for each pitch.

When nobody is on base, the catcher will give simple signs because there is nobody on base to intercept them.

When someone is on base, the catcher may use multiple signs, which are more complicated and it’s unlikely anyone on base can decode it.

But apparently the Astros front office was considering a program called “code breaker” that would decipher even the complicated signs.

The way it would work is that the camera in centerfield would relay the signs to a guy with a computer. He would input the signs and the actual pitch that was thrown. A computer program would then analyze it and crack the catcher’s code, so now even the complicated signs could be decoded and relayed to the hitter. However, based on the report, this particular idea never actually was used.

And Furthermore, what exact rule is it that says you can't intercept these signs? Does the fact that some technology (from about 50 years ago) was used make it somehow worse? Exactly what technology is allowed to be used to not violate this unwritten rule?

This whole thing is too dumb to even address.

You clearly know nothing about baseball.

This doesn't seem that hard to me. Figuring out signs by trial and error, luck or some other means is part of the game. Having a home field tech setup to do that, which other teams don't have and which the visiting team obviously can't have - is a totally different story. If you're sloppy with signs and they get figured out, well, that's something that can be anticipated. Having a videographer working with players/staff on a live feed to decipher signs is obviously quite different.

I don't get the issue, you don't want your signs stolen, change them.

No way you don’t see the difference in that and what the Astros did.

I do. But if you bring it onto the field, its seems fair game.
Technology has changed, and that's a big issue for MLB. I think they didnt have the proper rules in place. Not knowing for sure, was it technically illegal?
Also, how was the Astros road record/scoring?

Does it matter. I keep hearing stealing signs is frowned upon, but not illegal. If it's not illegal, I doubt MLB had wording in their rules pertaining to what happened.
I believe MLB was caught in a pickle...tried to set an example, and knew that a BUNCH of teams were doing something similar.
It's obvious MLB wants this to go away.

Have you ever pitched?

I assume no...because no pitcher wants to wear an earpiece. That’s stupid.

I don’t know the answer to this, but it’s completely irrelevant.

Well, since the situation only applies to home games, I can see many reasons how the info could be used and compared

The Astros have to play the A's multiple times a year.....if I'm Mike Fiers I would stay away from the ballpark on those days.

Whether you were successful or not at cheating doesn’t change the fact that you cheated.

It’s kinda like saying what the difference between listening to someone’s huddle and bugging their OC.
